Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Tesco re-opens on Tuesday... did local alternatives win your business?

So having been almost entirely reliant on the Tesco Express near the Salisbury for daily shopping since moving nearby, I was looking forward to being forced to buy every day stuff from some of the local convenience stores.

This really must have been a huge opportunity for these businesses to win new customers during the 6 week period Tesco closed for renovations.

Having used 4-5 other shops in all directions since then, the experience hasn’t been great. Prices are variable but the quality and freshness of a lot of the fruit and veg leaves a lot to be desired. Also there’s the lack of acceptance of cards / enforcing minimum fees etc.

I can’t help but feel a lot of these small stores have missed a huge chance to convince locals to shop elsewhere.

I will continue to use the Harringay local store, butchers, bakery etc for specialist stuff but for every day shopping it pains me to say we’ll be going right back to Tesco when it reopens.

What has everyone else’s experience been?

Not missed it much at all. And don't buy fruit and veg from there anyway _ I tend to go to the grocery shops on Green Lanes or Iceland instead. Iceland has got rid of Palm oil in all its Iceland products, and is working to get rid of plastic packaging - I think by 2020. Quite refreshing for a supermarket to be taking steps to stop the damage to the environment.

What is the alternative to plastic packaging? Cardboard/paper contributes far more to climate change which is a more pressing concern than landfill in my opinion

Tesco was alway a last resort for me as it’s so expensive.  Fruit and veg (I use Yassar Halim) is far cheaper, more varied on the Lanes and you can pick just one tomato if you so fancy.  The card business is an annoyance though so I always make sure I have cash.  I use Iceland for other stuff as they’ve upped their game in the last year of so, and Savers for household things

I'm a regular in Savers too.

I love a bargain!

Lots of support for Iceland here - will have to give it a look.

I didn't really miss it either. I often look in it on my way home from Sainsbury's but I rarely buy anything....things are pretty expensive.

I did miss the cash point though.

Didn't really change much, It's more the cashpoint and a sandwich to go place for me.

Went in yesterday.  Apart from a new floor and some nicer chiller cabinets I couldn’t see much of a difference - the over priced stock seems the same

'Very little helps' :)

Every lidl helps

I much prefer Yasar Halim for veggies and fruit and split my meat purchases between Yasir Halim, Iceland, Lidl & Sainsburys. I only use Tesco Express for bits like soured cream that are generally unavailable at the other shops (other than Sainsburys).
