Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Over a thousand primary schools and libraries were entered in an online prize draw to receive a rare signed print from Eric Carle, (you may have been one of those who voted) and Stroud Green Library has been drawn as one of the lucky winners.

Only five prints from Eric Carle’s wonderful story book “Slowly, Slowly, Slowly,” Said the Sloth, were up for grabs for schools and libraries in England. Eric Carle is best-known for his classic title The Very Hungry Caterpillar. In autumn 2010, every child starting primary school in England has received as a gift his vibrant, jungle-set story book about a placid, unflappable sloth.

The library will receive their signed print at a Rhymetime session attended by parents and children on Wednesday 1st December at 11am. The print will be presented by Janice Thomson, Senior Picture Book Editor at Puffin Books.

The prize draw was launched to celebrate this year’s Booktime programme, which saw 1.3 million free books being given away to reception children starting school in England. This year’s Booktime book packs for reception children contain a copy of Eric Carle’s “Slowly, Slowly, Slowly,” Said the Sloth (Puffin) and a non-fiction title called Why is the Sky Blue? (Ladybird), compiled by Geraldine Taylor and illustrated by Amy Schimler.

How lovely! Well done Stroud Green Library
Post above now updated with photos from the handing over ceremony.
That's lovely. Fans of children's illustration might like to know that Eric Carle has created an entire museum for it in Amhurst, Massachusetts (presumably using the royalties from The Very Hungry Caterpillar): http://www.carlemuseum.org/
The old hungry caterpillar is everywhere now isn't he!! Have always loved Carle's work.

Another great place for children's book/illustration fans, slightly closer to home, is the 'Seven Stories' national centre for children's books in Newcastle http://www.sevenstories.org.uk/home/

Well worth the journey, and has some fabulous exhibitions taking place throughout the year
