I picked this up in the council's forward plan. Alarm bells rung as I was afraid that it would mean the loss of the 7.5t weight restriction which is of course a deterrent against the use of this section of Wightman Road by HGVs.
I made some further enquiries and have the following information.
The bridge was assessed and found that it cannot carry the required vehicle loading in accordance with EU regulations and is showing severe signs of corrosion.
The structure is owned by Network Rail and it was jointly agreed that subject to funding the bridge will be strengthened however the current environmental weight restriction of 7.5T will remain in place.
Bids were placed to TFL and have now agreed to fund these works and the council are now seek committee approval to procure Network Rail to proceed with the strengthening of the bridge.
It is estimated that the design will be carried out this financially year, 2014-15 and the strengthening in 2015-16.
The council aim to maintain traffic flow during the strengthening works by the use of temporary lights, however the detail of the phasing of the works will have to be developed during the design process.
The the council's structural engineer and I will be working closely with Network Rail and Highways to ensure the works run as smooth as possible.
I will of course be seeking further reassurance that the bridge will maintain its 7.5t weight restriction even after the work has been done.

Yes. The southbound lane is constantly being clipped as drivers take the corner as it becomes Allroy Road. I have had a few close encounters myself there.
I wonder if we can put a pinch point in on the outer side of the cycle lane to make sure the lane does not get encroached on and also to restrict larger vehicles as Tris said?
Karen, as Hugh indicates, is there any way we can feed ideas into refurb?
Oh, and I have reported this several times, but you can often smell gas around that bridge... I have not for a while, but just remembered it has been a serial smell around there.
Are there any opportunities for community wins as part of this work?
Reading the council PDF the intention is to build it to standard 40T loading. So if 7.5T is in place it will be a choice subject to change. Back in the day of course lorries were not 40t and axles loads were not 6-8t either!
