And today I read:
Community Asset programme makes first commitment The first award from a £30 million fund to help community-led groups acquire assets from local authorities and develop them has been awarded to a community centre in County Durham.
The Pelton Fell Community Group and Chester-le-street District Council have received a grant of £337,000 to refurbish and extend the Pelton Fell Community Resource Centre.
The money will go towards incorporating a community café and multi-use games area. Ownership of the centre will then be transferred from the council to the community group via a 99-year lease at a peppercorn rent.
The funding has been drawn from the
Office for the Third Sector's £30 million Community Assets programme, which aims to empower local communities by offering grants to fund the refurbishment of council-owned buildings and facilities which are then transferred to the third sector.
Providing grants of up to £2 million, it is the first non-lottery funded scheme to be delivered by the Big Lottery Fund.
I put in an FOI request a couple of weeks ago to establish if there are any likely properties on our patch (Should any regular readers feel I'm becoming a little too free with my FOI request, Tried to get the info the old fashioned way, but they weren't playing ball). Will share the outcome of that request.
