St Ann's Road former police station on fire
The former police station in St Ann's Road is on fire. Fire fighters had to batter down the front door to get in. It doesn't seem as if anyone was in the building but I cannot be sure of that. I was just passing so took this photo.

From what I have heard from the fire brigade and those who witnessed the fire, there does indeed seem to be foul play.
I just wondered if anyone could enlighten me how this fire could benefit the developers?
I understand that the former police station needs to be preserved. Presumably the interior was due to be gutted and turned into flats with just the old facade kept. This fire seems to have gutted the interior, but the brick exterior has survived (as would be expected). Unless the entire structure is found to be unsafe (unlikely ) and has to be demolished, then surely the developers do not benefit? Or were they ordered to preserve interior features of the police station?

The permission was to demolish only the extensions and outbuildings behind the Police station and for the actual station building to be retained and converted. If the Police station is badly damaged and has to be demolished it will give scope to build more on the site without the constraints of retaining the station building, though a new planning application would need to be submitted. In effect it will be a completely empty site.
The police station is listed by Haringey as a building of local interest. It's not on the Historic England buildings list so has no legal protection.

So they only benefit if the structure is so badly fire damaged that it has to be demolished then. I'm really hoping that the building can be preserved.

Yep, and it is far cheaper to build new on the scale they are working to than to have to work around older buildings.

These old buildings have pretty sturdy facades so we can only hope it will be preserved. I know other similar buildings that have had devastating fires but the shell was saved.
