Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Draft drawing of redevelopment - Site Entrance from Chestnust PArk - by 6a architects and Maccreanor Lavington

The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, has today announced that Catalyst Housing has been selected as the development partner for the redevelopment of the St Ann’s Hospital site.

Catalyst’s plans for the site involve building 934 homes, with 50 of these affordable homes set aside for community-led housing, enabling local people to own some of the homes and making St Ann’s one of the largest community-led housing schemes in London. A search for the community organisation to take on these homes will be launched early in the new year.

The remaining affordable homes will be 60 per cent London Affordable Rent, 20 per cent London Shared Ownership and 20 per cent London Living Rent. Catalyst will offer Haringey Council the opportunity of purchasing half of the homes at London Affordable Rent for their housing portfolio. There will be key worker housing for NHS staff, with the Barnet, Enfield and Haringey Mental Health Trust able to make use of 22 London Living Rent homes for 10 years to ensure staff can be housed locally.

The new homes – ranging from family town houses to apartment blocks – will be designed by Karakusevic Carson Architects and 6a architects. All homes will aim to meet or exceed London Housing Design Guide space standards and will be highly sustainable and energy efficient.

The scheme includes 10,000m2 of new and existing tree cover, and the existing Peace Garden is being tripled in size. New playground space will also be created. Heritage assets, including St Ann’s Victorian water tower, will be preserved. There will also be improvements to pedestrian and cycling infrastructure along St Ann’s Road to improve access across the site, including to Chestnuts Park.

Catalyst is a leading housing association that manages over 21,000 homes across London and the South East.  They are developers of mixed-tenure neighbourhoods with a track record in estate regeneration.

That's great. Hopefully it will give the area a much-needed additional housing capacity and face lift.

Fantastic result for local campaign StART, who faced business and political opposition from the very beginning but stuck to their vision!

I'd personally like to hear an honest, clear, no holds barred assessment by the key members of StART.

Hasn't Covid-19 made it even clearer how divided and unequal our society has become and that poverty is deepening?

Are these the proportions of different homes needed by the borough's residents from one of the last remaining areas of publicly-owned land?

My expectations from Ejiofor and his cronies are at rock bottom and still sinking. But this decision is presumably Sadiq Khan's.

P.S. It would be amusing if it wasn't so often used to misrepresent. An artist's impression with  more than half the drawing trees and flowers and bushes in front of the usual towers and uniform blocks.

How will local roads Cope, when they are occupied ?

Well it doesn't affect me because I moved out years ago but I think that looks absolutely horrible !  Sad in exile !!
