Well, we were due rain today and as per the last time we were predicted a downpour it has not materialsied- nor does it look like it will after a glance at my weather app, and a quick consultation of the old barometer.
With the amazing weather being as great as it has I think it is time for a general plea to chuck a bucket or two of water onto the tree nearest you. If they have a black spout please chuck it down there. If not, and you have a moment, take a small hand held garden fork and break up the soil on the the ground around the base of the tree so the water will make it down to the roots, and not just run off the concrete like surface that most trees will have.
It is especially important that we look after our trees, as the council have made it clear that their budget for new tree and the replacement of old trees is simply not going to stretch. So, the key is to make the most of what we have and try to preserve it where we can.

Toady was supposed to be wet too Neil. In fact, I have been watching the weather and seeing rain forecast for the following day on several occasions only for it to not materialise. Its a bit odd really.
Suggest we see if it rains tomorrow, and if not, lets take a trip to our nearest tree.
Good shout
My road lost two recently planted trees over the winter and when I contacted Alex Fraser (the councils Tree & Nature Conservation Manager) requesting their replacement in the upcoming Harringay ward allocation, I was told that due to the Council needing to make further savings, the annual tree planting budget was withheld last year. There is no confirmation as to whether it would be re-instated for the forthcoming planting season, so there is no budget for replacement tree planting.
I echo what Justin says, we need to look after what we have. We would need a fair amount of rain to match a good bucket of water straight to a trees roots.
