Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

New solar powered bollards are being used in the borough's streets in locations where the electricity operated ones are frequently damaged by traffic.

A major incident in the borough on Christmas day last year knocked out the electricity powered bollards from a traffic island which, being unlit, was hit several more times by passing cars.

To prevent this happening again, the borough sourced some solar powered, self righting bollards, that might withstand a collision and still function.

Five sets of these were sited on islands along Westbury Avenue as an experiment and were well received.

Haringey's Cabinet Member for the Environment, Cllr Nilgun Canver, said:

"These bollards seem to work very well and are lit at night for free. When they are hit by traffic they are largely self-righting and the solar lighting is not affected.

"So far the council has installed 30 solar powered bollards, mainly on sites where the power has failed, and these have saved the council the cost of digging up the road to renew the electrical cables and they have proved very effective too.

"We will monitor these closely and see how their use might be extended where appropriate."

How many have been stolen to power garden ponds? I wonder.

Vernon, I expect that on 22 June you went round all day, sighing deeply and saying in a miserable voice: "Oh dear, oh dear, the evenings are drawing in again".

Though, given your little icon, you might like to try the Snow White Test. As you'll see, it's not entirely impossible for a Group Grumpy to use their strengths to make a positive contribution.

Strangly I came out as Sneezy, but I still do a good imitation of Grumpy and of course I am an old man.
