Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

The shop on GL opposite Umfreville (is it called Yervakar Foods?) has a marvellous selection of fruit out today - loads of punnets of soft fruit including redcurrants, blackberries, and two kinds of gooseberries, also what look like Victoria plums and a lot of other fruit. A real cornucopia - in fact  I recommend looking inside this shop as it has recently been revamped and the shelves are packed with unexpected goodies.

Thank you! Just got big punnet of red gooseberries, delicious. Hardly ever see them for sale.

The man in the shop thought they were cranberries and couldn't believe they were related to green gooseberries.

I got two punnets and made lovely jam.

According to the man in the Farmer's Market, who also had some, they are not red gooseberries but a cross between a gooseberry and a blakccurrant, called a "josta berry". Delicious anyway.

I picked up a whole box of sweet black cherries from the Turkish Food Market for just £7.99.  Delicious!

I live in Palmers green so could you tell me how far down green lanes  Yervakar Foods is? Is it far from The Salisbury pub? Gooseberries are so hard to come by these days. Crumble yearnings.

It's Yavuzlar I believe, near the Harringay Green Lanes Rail Station.

Great thanks.

Hope you get some gooseberries. They are rare these days sad to say.

Also, the service in Yavuzlar is much friendlier than the Turkish Food Market opposite it (across the road), where everytime i have been in shopping the cashier has been surly, disinterested and rude... and ignores the people queuing if any other Turkish person wants to push in!

I agree about Yavuzlar. I've been using it for more than 12 years I guess and you have a bit of a laugh and chat with the cashiers there. David is funny. It's makes shopping easier :))

Yavuzlar, of course - I could have got it right by looking out of my front door! I still think of it as 'Shamuss Abass', which is what it began life as. I've started braving the traffic to cross over and use them more, as I agree they are very friendly and have great stock.

Gooseberries in Crouch End Waitrose yesterday ,packaged as "Essentials" - maybe they are staging a comeback.  Also marked "for cooking", which is probably good as people have got so used to pick-and-eat fruits like blueberries, they may not understand about gooseberries, blackcurrants etc that you need to stew them gently with some sugar.
