Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Has anyone else noticed of late that there is a plume of restaurant smoke accumulating over the mid section of Pemberton and Mattison roads. Usually just over South Harringay School? I know that this is a common complaint in the neighbourhood but I have noticed it is far more pronounced, permanent and noxious than ever before, leading me to believe that it may be one of the restaurants in the area possibly lacking the required filtering systems? 

It is very concentrated - to the point where one can smell what is being cooked, and tends to 'hover' over said area - one can tell that the air quality changes by going up and down the ladder streets.

Seen TV reports of other local Authories. Where Environmental Enforcement have meters that registers Air quality

Seeing picture, sure they was forced to put in current high extractor Flues .

Has there been a meeting with Council Enforcement team ?

Has Ward Councillors been involved ?

There is a clear obligation on local authorities to deal with this kind of nuisance and powers to order its abatement 

But they won't take action against the Green Lanes Traders. They're the unelected kings of Harringay. Nothing is ever enforced.

Stav Aristides, you seem to begin with a guilty verdict. Having a wide range of views is important and often very valuable. And that includes strong views.

I only served once on a jury. A case of attempted murder. The hours and days spent on listening to the evidence and then in the jury room, changed the minds of several jurors including mine.

What process do you think might be a sound way to establish the facts and evidence; and to build a fair judgement in this case? 

A bottom-up audit of high-ranking council personnel's communications and financial affairs, and potentially some of the businesses on the high street who operate on vanishingly low levels of consumer demand for many years would be a start. But that would take hours and days nobody has these days. 

Kotkas, before the pandemic what actual evidence existed of "vanishingly low levels of consumer demand for many years"?

I no longer eat very much meat. Nor have I any links with Turkey or Turkish businesses But over the years I've joined friends and family members for enjoyable meals at a few of these Green Lane restaurants. Without spotting any "vanishing of consumer demand" whatever.

Could it perhaps be, Kotkas, that there's a simpler explanation than some mysterious and imaginary relationship between "high-ranking council personnel"  and "some of the businesses on the high street".

Might it just be possible that Turkish cuisine is among the major cuisines in the world and that business people have used their knowledge and skills to run successful restaurants?

I once "had it on good authority" from a Turkish speaking friend that the stews were delicious and good value. True.

Has there been meetings between those effected and the Council Enforcement team ?

As mentioned before there is a legal obligation for them to investigate and report back to complaints. 

As mentioned, there is Action that can be taken if Haringey does not assist 

Has those complaining spoke and got responses from Elected Ward Councillors ?

What I am highlighting Alan is a basic business model question. A stroll up and down green lanes (something I do at least once a day) will show you that few of these premises operate at anywhere near productive capacity, and that only a handful really appear to be thriving. This is especially true for entities such as Beans and Barley. I'd estimate (conservatively) that this business has approx. 110k of annual fixed costs:

- £20k business rates - you can look this up online +£40k rent (single unit online goes for 25k but let's say they save £10k by operating a double) +£50k salaries (1 front of house, 1 back of house, and maybe 0.5 person during busy times at £20k annual salary) + electricity, gas and other costs c.10k

That means that in order JUST to cover their fixed costs this business needs to generate £300 per day in free cash flow. Now assume it costs them 20p for every £1 they generate in sales - which is just the cost of inputs to make a coffee, sandwich, or to buy a pastry from a bakery, which is a VERY generous assumption.

They would have to generate £375 in sales, on average every day. Just to stay in business. That's 75 orders of £5 average value. On an 8-hour day that means serving 10 customers an hour, EVERY hour. Just to stay in business. 

Since it changed hands, I have not seen this base level of demand (or highly busy periods that clearly compensate for lulls.) So how can companies operate continuously in plain defiance of the laws of commercial economics?

I think that the really major problem for Green Lanes eateries is that they offer mostly the same thing.  There is really is little incentive to try another place because you can be pretty certain that what you see on the menus is replicated a dozen times at other places within a five minute trot.  

Many of us probably remember Internet cafes.  The early ones raked in the money so there was soon a proliferation of Internet cafes, all hoping to achieve the same. But they didn’t - the same business was just spread more thinly.  And they were vulnerable, the minute home internet access stopped being expensive dial up and mobile data became cheaper they toppled.  Green Lanes suffers from a similar problem - if you can eat at the place at the bottom of your street why bother to to walk an extra few minutes to another identical establishment?

Bit odd you haven't incorporated the bribes and backhanders implicit in your original post into this piece of financial fan fiction.
