Sixth Season of August Pop Up Proms in Waterlow Park

The Friends of Waterlow Park present their sixth season of Sunday Pop Up Proms this August showcasing three bands: DuoTanwen – a welcome return from last year this time with their repertoire of lively traditional folk music, the Monoversals - a local Camden blues, ska and reggae band and the Funny Bones trombone quartet, welcomed back in a new line-up. Free to all.

The bands

Duo Tânwen 16 August

Duo Tânwen is formed of Ruby Howells (flute) and Bonnie Scott (harp), and was created in 2020, during the first year of their undergraduate studies at the Royal Academy of Music. The duo, who have known each other since early childhood, have a particular passion for performing works by female, underrepresented and global majority composers.

Duo Tânwen have performed in venues such as Regent Hall, Kenwood House and Senate House, and most notably in the presence of HM The Queen and HRH The Princess Royal. The duo has also performed on several occasions at Ely Arts Festival for both their summer and winter editions and have a strong presence in the East of England and the Southeast. Duo Tânwen are fast establishing themselves as an in-demand chamber duo for both public recitals and private engagements. Ruby and Bonnie are looking forward to making their debut at Wigmore Hall in 2027 as part of the For Crying Out Loud! series and hugely enjoy community participation work.

Online, the pair have received recognition and support on social media from stars such as RAYE and Anna Lapwood, as well as by BBC Radio 3, and are beginning to grow a strong community on both Instagram and TikTok where they have amassed over one million views across channels.

The Monoversals 23 August

Fresh from playing a brilliant festival gig in the Chilterns the six muso-strong band is sounding good. The musicians are all based in Camden and come together every week to play the music they love - a walk through 60 years of blues into ska and into reggae. Playing classic hits with a twist.

The Funny Bones 30 August

The Funny Bones are an award-winning trombone quartet founded at the Royal Academy of Music in London. By playing original music, new compositions and most frequently their own arrangements, they aim to push the boundaries of what is possible on the trombone, showcasing it as the incredibly diverse instrument that it is.

The group are Young Artists of the Worshipful Company of Musicians after receiving first prize in the Brass Ensemble Competition in 2024, and were finalists in the British Trombone Society Trombone Quartet Competition the same year. They believe a factor of their success is the tutelage of trombone royalty such as Ian Bousfield, Peter Moore, Bob Hughes and Matt Gee. 

Members of the Funny Bones have played with professional ensembles including the Philharmonia Orchestra, Royal Scottish National Orchestra, the Hallé and the Ulster Orchestra, and as a group are proud to have performed in Regent Hall alongside the trombones of the Cory Band, Southwark Cathedral with the fantastic FiveBy5 Trumpet Quintet and recently had a residency in Ferrandou, France.
