Stop the rat running on the Ladder

Please click to sign my online petition asking the council to traffic-manage better on the Ladder roads, which are heavily used as cut-throughs so drivers can avoid the main routes.

Following the nasty accident that happened on Sunday on Beresford Road, the council should review the road use urgently. The more of us who sign, the more notice the council will take so please get involved.

I do have some ideas. On the other side of the lanes in the gardens and on Hermitage Rd they have successfully prevented through traffic by restricting access to emergebcy services or residents only. In other places they have part pedestrianised some streets. Some areas use no right or left turns as a way to manage the traffic flow. Or some streets could be made two way. I have looked at most other nearby areas and the ladder is the only bit where there have been virtually no interventions.

I agree that something needs to be done about the traffic in the area Libby but what do you mean by the `Ladder' roads - does this include Wightman and Green Lanes - or are you just referrring to the rungs? The way people drive along those roads is also appalling. What do you propose the Council should do? Personally I think the 20 mph needs to be enforced because right now it isn't. I always drive along those roads at MAXIMUM 20 but regularly have drivers on my tail trying to intimidate me to drive faster. I don't think pushing more traffic onto Green Lanes or Wightman is a solution

Wightman Rd is a B road, and it is residential. It already has too much traffic. The Green Lanes is an A Road. Also Turnpike Lane is an A Road. I am referring to A roads when I talk about main roads...

Wightman Road needs serious investment. I walk on it every day and parked cars frequently block the pavement in an attempt to stay out of the speeding traffic. The 20MPH should be enforced, and we need better more frequent crossings as well. I think that cars should park on the road, not the pavement which would slow the traffic down naturally as it would be one lane in places. Alternatively, the cars could only park along one side of the road. So I suppose I'm talking about traffic management on  the rungs of the ladder and one side of the support!

My road (Beresford) suffers from people trying to cut through to St Anns' Road. They whizz along Wightman and down the ladder to avoid traffic on Turnpike Lane and the Green Lanes. The bottom rungs of the ladder suffer the same way from people avoiding Endymion and the Green Lanes. Drivers should use the main roads, despite the traffic. Residents should not have to suffer from people trying to avoid a traffic jam in rush hour. Traffic on Wightman Rd would reduce if drivers were not able to use the rungs of the ladder as cut throughs.

The rung roads were much slower when they were two-way, all those years ago. No road humps, no speeding cars that I recall.

Now they are one-way, it's easier to speed between the humps, and people complain about the vibration from the cars and trucks going over the humps too.

Never did understand why the council made these roads one-way. Caused more problems than it solved in my opinion. What problem were they trying to solve, anyway?

Probably happened towards the end of a financial year. Haringey always implement traffic folly schemes at that time of year, just to use up the budget!
But it was a nightmare. People would often not give way and there would be stand-offs as the roads were never wide enough for two way traffic. Very much like how some of the Garden Roads are now. On the subject of Wightman. If you only have parking on one side then 50% of residents would lose their parking places and migrate down to parking on the rung roads.
Traffic can either flow easily (with a tendency to go quickly) or can face obstruction (with a tendency to move slowly). You can't have both.

It wasn't that bad when the roads were two-way, and you had to drive a lot less distance going or coming or both. If you did come to a stand off, generally you could either back up to a passing spot, or you'd be on your own road so could always abandon your car and wait for the obstructive idiot to reverse. Greener and slower. Seems that it was better in most ways. Everything since has just been sticking plasters over a crappy decision by a crappy council.

And all the worry about "residential roads" - people seem to forget that Whightman and Green Lanes are equally as residential - they just get the bum luck of being busier. Lucky rung road residents should be grateful that they live on quieter roads, not harp on about getting rid of traffic which has to go somewhere - pushing it on to other roads.

This is London. There are cars. People ought to get over that, or move to the countryside, or a private estate, rather than nimby wishing their "troubles" on others.
I remember the days when Green Lanes used to be a carpark all the time from Seven Sisters to Turnpike. Considering that car ownership has probably increased since then, I am surprised that traffic now seems more free flowing.
I am not being a nimby. Really. I am very concerned about Wightman road too. I would like to see a solution for all roads on the ladder. People who choose to live on the green lanes do so in the full knowledge that they live on a busy road served by double decker buses. I am just hoping to find a way to discourage people from using narrow residential roads not designed for heavy traffic as a short cut. But you're right - this is London. There is no need to use a car at all for 90% of journeys and car use should be discouraged generally. Preventing speeding and rat running is one part of this in my opinion. But we can all agree to disagree. It is just pretty scary when a major car wreck happens a few doors away from your house and I would like to find a way to prevent it from happening again. That's my main motivation. I would like to feel safer on my road and on the walk to school I do every day with my small children along wightman road.

absolutely support your petition libby but don't be too frightened by the incident. it seems the accident was caused by man having a fit. sadly it could have happened in any road at any time.

Generally though if you provide more roads the traffic will expand to fill it and vice versa. If it becomes the case that Green Lanes is at a standstill then people may consider alternatives to driving a car. Particularly the large number of vehicles that only have one person in them.

Personally I'd like Green Lanes to be a bit more free flowing, even if it was at the expense of the ladder roads. Getting rid of parking and having a bus lane south to north would be a start.

I'm sorry if you don't like the wording - this is my first time giving a monkey's - never done a petition before, never gone on a forum before. Quite frankly, I'm starting to regret it. I only joined Harringay Online ten days ago despite happily living in the area for years. I have nothing against cars, or driving but I would like the council to make good on their promise to review the traffic volumes in the area and propose an alternative that does not simply push the traffic problem around the Ladder. The Hewitt Rd changes resulted in what feels like a doubling of the through traffic volume on our narrow street. Which means that accidents like the one that happened on Sunday are more likely. Sign, don't sign. Drive, don't drive. But if you do drive, please don't speed down our narrow quiet (hopefully) street. Or do - evidently I can't stop you and neither will the council, nor can the police most likely. Or better still, get a bus. Or walk. Or simply do nothing at all. Welcome to Harringay online. I don't know if it's been mentioned elsewhere in replies to this post but there is a group trying to address exactly this issue with the coucil, via a residents' group called the LCSP. I think they have at least one person from each road in the group - I'd be happy to find out who on it for Beresford and how other people can get involved if you'd like?
