Last week an elderly man (I don't know where he was from but this was not his country of origin) walked down my street picking up rubbish and pieces of broken glass from the pavement. He did this in a very relaxed and unostentatious way and I thanked him for doing this.
I'm not advocating everyone do this (though picking up the odd piece and putting it in the nearest bin is no hardship) but it makes a pleasant change from seeing people dropping litter as if it is their right, and lovely to exchange smiles with someone being quietly proactive.
Just a word on being proactive; I live in an ex-local authority flat, Homes for Haringey are the freeholder. We have suffered from rubbish in communal grounds, abandoned 'large items' not being collected, recycled waste bags (full) left/thrown in garden, household rubbish thrown off balconies and dog waste not being collected. Each occasion I have contacted HfH and made a nuisance of myself until I get a response. And where necessary providing them with 'poo' pictures to illustrate the dog waste etc.
To their credit each item has been addressed, but it takes a lot of time and effort. HfH wrote to tenants/leaseholders regarding the waste and rubbish, they have resolved the dog waste problem and the large items. My latest 'victory' was to get them to plant up barren areas of dirt which made the place look unloved. It seems at the moment to have had a positive effect; there has been less rubbish; maybe the caretaker has been prompted into being more proactive - |I understand these are things he should have been reporting.
Not saying that HfH is the same as the dealing with local council matters, but it kind of proves a point that you do have to be proactive in reporting issues/registering complaints. One caveat, I am not impressed with Veolia.
