Just as long as they have big clear messages everywhere than an hour's smoking a shisha is equivalent to smoking 100 cigarettes - but it doesn't feel like that as the smoke is cool and sweet.

I think people are smart enough to realise that smoking is bad for you.

But somehow they don't think of it as smoking, as it's so different from slipping a fag from a packet. There's been surveys that indicate this, and I bet if you ask any of the shisha smokers how much nicotine and tar products they believe they are absorbing, they wont say, almost two fags a minute.

And I doubt it would stop many people if they found out it had such a high cigarette equivalent. Especially because your 'typical' shisha smoker is either already a cigarette smoker, or only smokes occasionally. Just to clarify, are you also angry that pubs and bars don't display signs warning of the dangers of drinking?

Drinking doesn't automatically do damage, smoking does.
Not so much angry, as sad that people are poisoning themselves without necessarily knowing it. I do think there's a case for warning notices in shisha bars about just how much nicotine etc they are taking in.

For alcohol to do no harm at all, one would have to drink fewer than 0.5 units per day. I think there's just as much reason to have warnings on packaging and in bars that serve alcohol as there is for there to be warnings on the same things to do with smoking.
A lot of things are bad for you, and people should make informed choices. However, regulating the places that serve intoxicants/allow people to partake in other risky behaviour in a way that means warning signs should be prominently displayed is unrealistic in the current cultural climate.

Informed choice, is what I'm asking for.

"The important issue for me is to know what the risks are, so that folks can make an informed decision about their potentially risky behavior. Being enticed by a sweet flavor, a social atmosphere and a *myth* about water “filtration” does not constitute an informed decision.
The beginning of informed decision-making includes the knowledge that the sweet flavor is accompanied by carcinogens, heavy metals, and lethal carbon monoxide, and that the behavior has been associated with cancer and cardiovascular disease."
hi, I am aware this thread is a bit older (my first comment on HoL)
what about second hand smoke for residents living near by?
I live close to a shisha bar and constantly have to inhale that smoke
the area is largely residential
by law shishas have to be smoked outside, or with a maximum enclosure around them of 50%
this leave 50% to pollute the air unrestricted fanning partly my way
I am not against people smoking, if someone wants to inhale rubbish in their lungs ... go ahead
but please in a way that I and others don't have to second hand smoke the left overs
with the weather getting warmer I like to have the windows open as everyone else
any idea what could be done?
thank you
