Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Serious fly tipping issue, Conway Rd

Help/advice needed

I realise we are probably not alone in this respect but where we live (Conway Rd) we have a MAJOR issue with fly tipping - all sorts of stuff - fridges, furniture, carpets, books, clothes. you name it, we've had it. We live on a quiet bit of the road with few houses and it seems the spot opposite our house has now been identified as an acceptable place to leave rubbish of all kinds. I caught one man shifting a whole cupboard from his house round the corner to this fly tipping spot. He seemed to think it was OK to do.

What can we do? Yes we will talk to the council, of course. Would a sign help? any other ideas welcome

I've just completed the online form on Haringey website which seems encouraging. they commit to removing rubbish by next day. 

My question for here is what could be done to discourage people from fly tipping around our house

I sympathise with you. We have a similar problem in our road where people sometimes dump rubbish. Whenever I see something dumped, I phone the council refuse department (0208 885 7700) to report it. They are very good and always collect the stuff within 24 hours. If you prefer you can report it online instead of phoning.

As for how to prevent it happening in the first place, I don't know unfortunately. So i just report it to the council every time and they take it away. This stops any dumped rubbish building up.

My preferred method of reporting these days in via the Love Clean Streets app. A Haringey skinned version is currently being finalised and should be released soon. In the meantime, the generic version works as well as any other reporting method.

Report it Viola and Brian Ellick at the council, Brian comes over as a caring dedicated kinda guy and he's head of rubbish enforcement. No harm in CC'ing Nilgun.

We have a 'live' tip in Landsdown Rd and Im about to email him a nice photo of it as it hasnt been cleared again for a month and its huge and smelly. If you see vans record their number plate and report them to him also.

Suggestion; Assuming your property overlooks the dumping area, connect a little camera to a laptop, preferably a camera with zero lux for night time (Maplin prob have one). You want to be able to record their number plates and day/time of incident. Info for council enforcement section should be usable for prosecution - but others on HOL should know whether this is the case or not.

Just as a heads-up, WPRA asked a police contact about the use of CCTV for a fly-tipping situation.  Their response was:

"You are correct in saying that personal cctv cameras have come down in price, but infringement law states that this must only be put up to cover your property, and not any other area, not even the pavement outside your home."

Perhaps Nilgun can comment on whether LBH Enforcement have CCTV that can be deployed for dumping hotspots?

If it were working girls plying their trade I bet they'd be keen on actually turning up under cover to catch them rather than installing CCTV. Just saying.

I think that viewpoint about domestic use of CCTV warrants some checking. Here are some apparently alternative viewpoints. And here is an article in The Telegraph suggesting there is no legal restriction at all currently.

thanks everyone for your comments and ideas. I don't really want to go down the line of getting CCTV. I am mobilising neighbours to be on the look out for car descriptions/registrations etc in the hope we might catch one or two people.

Out of interest is there any precedent for an area being identified as a fly tipping 'hot spot' by the council which could mean that they are more likely to be on the look-out or involve community police etc? Our road is also a hot spot for car crime (3 last week alone) so this combined with fly tipping might highlight the street as a problem, but I'm not sure how joined up this all is...

Yes, report the car crime to the St Ann's/Harringay SNT team.  Let me know what response you get as I am on the ward panel for St Ann's.

We also have a lot of car crime.  A resident recently informed me that the criminals have a device where you think you have automatically locked your car but the device blocks the signal and the criminals then enter your car when you have left.

Hi,

We have been having a similar problem on Hornsey Lane Gardens at the entrance to Northwood Hall for a long time.  Veolia are fantastic at clearing it quickly but a more long term deterrent solution is needed.  We have large items such as fridges. mattresses and furniture dumped there regularly.  I did ask Veolia to inform Haringey's enforcement team to see if some kind of sign/penalty notice could be installed but never heard back.  I am always surprised at Haringey turning down a money making opportunity, but I am not at all surprised at their lack of enforcement.
