Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

I know this has been mentioned on another thread but please try and make it to Downing Street tonight to demostrate our revulsion at Trump's hideous bigotry. It bears mention that NONE of the countries which have produced terrorists acting in America are on the list. Arms and oil are too important to exclude Saudi Arabia, from where 15 of the 9/11 bombers came.

"disembowel" my arguments eh? but no guts.

He's only been in the job for 13 days! Give him time, he's already establishing an alternative 'reality' and identifying the 'enemy within' and outside the US. From villifying journalists for daring to question his lies and for not flattering him, printing weekly lists of any crime commited by immigrants (a tactic employed by the Nazis against Jews), planning his own security and intelligence network (according to Kellyanne Conway his aide), removing legistlation to separate religions from politics, placing cronies and family into all positons of power....From the holocaust Museum

The fact that more Americans die from shootings than terrorism certainly seems to have escaped Trumps attention, averaging 12,000 a year (and 24,000 injures) and an average of 2,500 of those are children up to the age of 19 years. But rather than do something to curb gun control Trump has widened it so that from today people with severe mental illness are allowed to own guns in the US and guns are being introduced into schools (for security). However he is more concerned about Muslims entering the US who have undergone 1-2 years severe vetting, many of whom are children.

The press is not unbiased. individuals on the ground within the press may be less so but the editor and chiefs have the last word and are just another corporate machine with corruption peppered within. For me I don't go for the beauty political parade. Say the right words, look the so called part with friendly smiling face yet below the surface you commit to secret services interferenance and giving financial aide to overthrow governments causing wars, 100,000's dead and people displaced. American or British lives are no more important than people from 2nd or 3rd worlds. I would rather hear bile coming out of someones mouth rather than sweet words from others yet 100,000's killed in wars. Time will tell who is the worst bad guy when comparing the bigger pictures.

Well said, Ian.  I agree with you 100 per cent.  Beware the smile on the face of the liberal tiger.  Look at what happened this week at Berkeley, California.  There's true hatred for you.

Really really terrible Geraldine, unlike that attack on worshippers in Quebec.

Healthy cynicism about a biased press is no bad thing however defining the media as ;the 'opposition',  calling journalists and reporrters liars and telling people that they must not believe anything that is reported by the press is dangerous; add to that a willingnes to deny proven facts and replace them with 'alternative facts' and make up masacres and present as fact to serve a political argument is dangerous and disgraceful.

Hugh Muir from the Guardian is far from independent and a fearless journalist. He is under the control and direction from his bosses which is why he did not take to press a relevant story about racial discrimination within a FSTE100 company in 2012. If you are a big player and the story cannot be contained then it has to be printed and it is difficult to contain but if you are small fry the press can and do collude to block stories for reasons known to them. Until you have personally seen the dark side of protectionism within the media people unknowing may find it difficult to believe.

The article was not written by Hugh Muir. I cannot see what is contentious with it, simply Kellyanne Conway stated and maintained (during a televised interview) that there had been a massacre in Bowling Green, US. committed by Iraqis, she said this in order to support the anti Muslim travel ban, however no such massacre took place. She then blamed the press for not covering the non existant massacre.

I can find no reason for any black arts here from the Guardian or the TV company, Kellyanne volunteered the words which were lies, or 'alternative facts', their lack of veracity has been proven by people who live in Bowling Green. There was no massacre however there was an attempt to manipulate the public through lying about a non existant massacre which was quickly exposed by the press.

What is dangerous is assuming that all press and media reports are invariably lies (as opposed to Trumps tweets), some reports in the press may contain lies, some maybe distortions however I think most people are able to sift out the dross and contextualise the story and the reporter. And no not every story makes it for a whole variety of reasons some dubious some not.

she also said  “I bet it’s brand new information to people that President Obama had a six-month ban on the Iraqi refugee program after two Iraqis came here to this country". The 2 men in question have been sentenced to life in prison for terror offences. This movement of people band or suspension was not reported globally, why? What we need is balance of reporting and independence. "Most people are able to sift out the dross and contextualise the story and the reporter" is not reality. People mostly believe what is written and that comes from accepted sources but as lies and deception from governments and big business has become more apparent we are now seeing a break down of trust in large institutions including the media. This breakdown of trust does not mean that 80% of information or more from such sources are false, withheld, mis-represented etc. At the end of the article they are asking for donations gjven that they are an independent and fearless organisation that report news. My example of hugh Muir is that I know from experience that he and his superiors were not independent and fearless.

There was no massacre at Bowling Green, USA.

The two Iraqis had been monitored for months and were imprisoned for attempting to send money and arms to Iraq but were not successful. (They had been  active with al Qaeda while in Iraq and somehow had got through the US vetting procedure).

Their case was reported thoroughly in the US press in 2011 causing great alarm.

Following their case The Dept of Homeland security re-vetted 58,000 immigrants already in the country and strengthend vetting on the 25,000 Iraqis awaiting immigration vetting during a 6 month period in 2011.

At no time was immigration banned from Iraq to the US, immigration from Iraq continued thoughout this period with 10,000 entering the US in 2011, these were people with existing green cards, work permits and people who had already been vetted.

The strengthened vetting meant delay, but no ban, for about 10,000 Iraqis applying during 2011.

The re-vetting policy was widely reported on ABC news in 2011, the Washington Post and other media, particularly as one Iraqi who had worked for the US in Iraq was murdered before he could be vetted.

Just because Kellyanne Conway says "I bet its brand new information to people..." doesn't mean that it was "brand new information to people", it was in the public realm, it had been widely reported on, and people who read the news were completely aware of it.

She was trying to conflate it with Trumps ban on Muslims to score political points and trying to stir things up by saying there had been a massacre when there was none.

I agree that governments and big business tell lies and as I said ''healthy cynacism is no bad thing", but there is no point looking for conspiracies when non exist. The media is a business, they print the news that will sell their product however it is possible to read widely enough to get reliable information from a range of sources.

I was not aware of this 2011 situation but I am globally aware of the continuous reporting of all things Trump that are seen as unacceptable. I do not know of the details of the 2011 situation and without an investigation it would be difficult to make accurate comparisons. There are a lot of news out there but the masses tune in to mass media for information and if some news are not globally represented then there would be a case for discrimination of information.

Never thought I'd say this, but hooray for Bercow !!
