Rubbish bins rummager, gain
I've just stopped a woman rummaging through my neighbours bins. She calmly asked 'problem? when I asked her to stop.
And then shrugged her shoulders and walked off saying 'sorry'.
No doubt ours were next. But she's diligently carried on down the rest of the street. Maybe it's just another form of recycling and I should accept it but our bins are not communal on public space as in other countries. It still seems like an invasion of privacy somehow.
I thought it was a good thing when I lived in Bulgaria to see stuff being taken and recycled from the street communal bins. We didn't have our 'own' bins then. But I cant get used to it here. I know this discussion has cropped up many times before.
Perhaps this woman needs the money for whatever good rubbish she can find. And she did say sorry....

We have the same issue on Milton Avenue and surrounding roads where a van drops off, usually women and even young children, with shopping trolleys who work their way down the road. A neighbour on the next road challenged a group of men who were going into front gardens a month ago and met with a very aggressive response.

Now here's the thing- we keep recycling this issue because clearly there is a lot of concern about it, it is upsetting and worrying some people and some of us want to share their experiences of what's going on in their street.
None of us is too sure what we can do about it if anything. Probably nothing but maybe all this discussion will emerge as an issue what we might what to raise with local councillors especially as it's become so organised and involves some aggressive behaviour. It might be linked with other issues dare I say such as begging on the streets so it goes round.... People kept harking on about proliferation of betting shops and it's finally become acknowledged as an issue by some politicians.
Perhaps we should get the legalities of this sorted. Someone posted that it was illegal- is it for sure? If so, then we are talking about organised crime going on on a regular basis.

We used to see these resourceful recylers on our estate in N15 but not for some time. The ladder must offer better pickings.

Sorry folks to re open this old can of...beans! just spotted an elderly couple on Hermitage Road who were walking along with trolleys and rummaging (tidily) in domestic bins from the curb side. The man was very frail and elderly, looked to be in his 80's. From what I saw they were taking food items, half jars of stuff, discarded loaves and some bathroom products that had been binned. I tried to engage them but they spoke no English. As I thought, survivalists not criminals.

That's terrible, they should be all safe and warm at their age.
If they don't speak English, where are their families I wonder? Maybe recently arrived and this is the only way they know of getting food. I'm sure they would be eligible for help, if they knew but how to get that across if they don't understand the lingo?
