An RSPCA ‘chugger’ came to our door the other day saying that cats in this area are being tortured/killed and then returned to their owners. Was this just a sick ploy to get people to donate based on the Croydon cat killer, or some sort of scam? He didn’t want cash so probably legit but alarmist tactics nevertheless. Did anyone else speak to him?

I saw a group of four on Hampden yesterday, talking to one of the residents, but I didn't speak to them myself.
I feel quite sorry for the chuggers but this is a shock tactic they have been told to use. And a despicable one as no such reports to the police. Just some background, I made complaints to RSPCA about the tactics being used. It seems RSPCA outsources its fund raising activities and the companies who employ the chugged are in effect door to door salesmen who have no links to the charity. They work solely on commission (I.e don't get a salary) so pulling at someones social conscience is their way of getting money. Although you may not have parted with money youll probably have been told you can cancel at any time but in fact you're signing up for a minimum of 3 months & if you cancel before the poor young salesperson gets nothing. I know all this because My little brother started working for a direct marketing company for RSPCA only to realise it was not the charity. He had to pay all of his own expenses, pay to use RSPCA promotional material and worked from 8am - 10pm and was expected to sign a contract to sign his rights away. For 2 months he didn't receive a penny so he was out of pocket at hostage to the dodgy company. I intervened read the dodgy terms & conditions & realised it was a pyramid scheme and all the "MDs" get the money. I wrote to RSPCA several times & they tried to distance themselves from the company suggesting it was an employment matter. Disappointed by this i wont support RSPCA as they are the only charity employing these companies. So I feel sorry for the often young chuggers who buy into the belief they will be rich and MDs within a year but are in fact cheap labour on a zero contract. Sorry for the long message but I'm glad Jane has posted this as the only way all funds go to RSPCA is if you go into their retail shops.
Hi Ame
Thanks very much for explaining how this operates! Like you, I can't condone these tactics but feel sorry for the chuggers who are conned. We didn't sign up for anything but will continue to support the charity via the shops.
One came to our door on Monday trying to get me to sign up to the RSPCA lottery.
Thanks for the heads up. And the explanation. I purposely don’t answer my door to anyone so I don’t get sucked into their stories, but as you say it’s the door sales person who loses out
i have always been a big supporter of Rspca but less and less so now, from the various stories I have heard. Including sacking the last ceo and employing a new one who would make more money for them, in their various way. So all becomes about money rather than the animals
