Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Transport for London (TfL) has confirmed that from October 25, 2021, the central ULEZ (Ultra low emission zone) is increasing to create a "single larger zone".

The expansion will reach the North Circular Road (A406) and South Circular Road (A205), although the roads themselves are not in the zone.

As with the existing ULEZ in London, the expanded zone will continue to operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week with a £12.50 charge for vehicles that don't meet the emission standards.

The purpose of the scheme is to improve the capital's air quality, which has contributed to thousands of premature deaths and other serious conditions in the capital.

Currently, the area covered by the scheme is just around Central London, but from October 25, 2021, this will expand to most areas within the North and South Circular roads.

To be exempt from the ULEZ charge, petrol cars, vans and minibuses must meet the Euro 4 emissions standard and diesel must meet Euro 6.

The ULEZ operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week, with a £12.50 daily charge for vehicles that do not meet the required emissions standards that need to go into or cross the zone.

This means if you drive every day, you would need to pay £4,550 in total.

The ULEZ area will completely cover Hammersmith & Fulham, Kensington & Chelsea, Camden, Islington, Haringey, and Hackney.

Barnet, Ealing, Hounslow, Richmond upon Thames, Wandsworth, Lambeth, Southwark, Lewisham, Greenwich, Redbridge, and Waltham Forest Enfield and Newham will also be covered.

The Mayor's Office has been offering a scrappage scheme for cars that don't meet ULEZ standards, which I presume is still running. If you receive certain benefits you can get £2000 for scrapping your old vehicle (as long as you've owned it for at least a year.)

You first create an account and apply to see if you are eligible, then scrap the car and submit the certificate of destruction, and they send you a cheque - the process takes a few weeks.

Interesting, I didn't know about this. I'm not on benefits so can't apply. I scrapped my old Volvo already and sadly must sell my old Yamaha Virago motorbike which is just too old to pass the test. Sad but we need to clean our air. I think this is a great scheme to help less well off stay mobile.

If you haven't checked yet, you can see whether your vehicle meets the ULEZ & LEZ standards by typing in your registration number on this government web page :
