Recycling in London: 33 boroughs, 33 policies

The London Borough of Southwark is to extend its 10,000 property food waste collection trial to a series of flats in the area. The trial already collects food waste from kerbside properties in the borough and will now be extended to four blocks of 24 flats in East Dulwich for six months. Under the trial scheme, each house will receive a kitchen caddy and compostable food waste bags, which will feed into a 240 litre communal food waste bin in each of the blocks. Veolia Environmental Services in Southwark managing director Simon Bussell said: “Following the success of the food waste pilot, an extended trial scheme for those living in flats was the obvious next step. We have worked with the council to create an appropriate package for this type of property and we hope that residents in Friern Road will embrace the new service and make it every bit as successful as it has been in the original pilot area.” According to Veolia, the introduction of the food waste collection service has pushed recycling rates to over 50% in the trial area.
