Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Having eaten in once before, we got a takeaway from Hanoi Pho on Green Lanes last night.

It was excellent! We had vegetable spring rolls, summer rolls, followed by sizzling chicken and  roast duck (both with rice and salad), and stir-fried aubergine with bean curd. Very tasty, with a fresh feel.

I mention it, because the place was empty, compared to the crammed Turkish restaurants, and I wish them more business and definite survival. They deserve it. For those who don't know, they already have a well-established restaurant in Hackney.

Hanoi Pho is at 1 Grand Parade, just next to the Salisbury pub.

Great to see a review on this place! I'm super happy we now have Vietnamese in the neighbourhood, so will definitely try them out.

The decorations are bloody awful though. How long did they have to plan that opening ? A picture of New York ? Plastic bamboo ? Eugghhh.

I'm a fan too. The salt and pepper squid is great and I hope they get more custom because we need a bit of variety on Green Lanes.

Ahaha, I was just about to reply with the exact same thing. I can confirm that the salt and pepper squid is delish!

I have eaten there 4 times. The first three were great but on the 4th occasion I'm pretty sure my noodles were swimming in MSG. Really dehydrating. Felt awful for about 12 hours. Also wish they would clean their windows. The very smeary windows give an unclean impression. I'm not sure if i'm going to go back after the noodle experience.

I had a friend who was working in Thailand for a couple of years and had a cook. After two years and before he left to come back to England he asked the Thai cook if she could show him how to make this really tasty soup she always made. She agreed, left the room and came back with a packet of powder bought from the shop. She said ' mix that with boiling water '.

I have noticed quite a few scores of 1 on the 'scoresonthedoor' website for establishments that have only recently opened. I've actually visited some of them on the Parade and they were literally brand new and shiny. Entirely new fit outs, new kitchen equipment etc..

Is it possible that this rating is the default, and the actual rating is not put in place until a Haringey Council employee has visited and conducted an inspection?

I am a big fan of Hanoi Pho. Diversity is the key and it is great to have them trading on the high street. Try the crab spring roll if you get a chance.

Yes Paul, 1 star can be given to a new business that hasn't been inspected yet or or an existing one where the inspection hasn't happened within the set timescale. A new category of "To be inspected" would seem fairer. It's a common problem though. There is a lack of qualified Environment Heath Officers (EHO) across the country and those who are qualified see better wages in the private sector, the big supermarket chains for example. It's one of the reasons that local authorities have to pay through the nose for agency EHOs.

How is it that a former councillor did not know this..

It's still the case that a new business will often score a 1-star largely just for being new (it's almost always related to paperwork). I've had this confirmed to me by a source who does this for a living and is more than happy to go on the attack if need be :).

Yep, there was a newish business on Green Lanes reported on here to be one star a little while ago. The owner came on the site to explain that it was about paperwork delays.

Indeed - which was what prompted me to ask an expert
