LONDON Centric reports today that a building in Crouch End is (unwittingly) sending untreated raw sewage into London's river system.
On this occasion, Thames Water is not to blame. Responsibility may lie with "dodgy builders and DIY plumbers".
The filth "surfaces in a local Tottenham Park, filled with sewage and wet wipes". The Moselle Brook flows from west to east through the Lordship Recreation Ground, which is the park affected.
Haringey Council is reported to have declined to identify the building in Park Road. This suggests that council officers have undertaken investigation in order to narrow down the source to a single road in the Borough.

I am an occasional member of the Lordship Rec 'River Squad' volunteer group, and know the state of the Moselle all too well. To be fair to Thames Water, they have improved the quality of the water somewhat through their misconnection programme. Last Saturday when we were clearing vegetation there was a lot of oil clinging to everything and eye-catching rainbow effects floating on the water surface. Pretty vile.
A glance at the ordnance map for 1873 shows that the Moselle Brook crossed Park Road more or less at right angles where Shepherd's Lane now faces Park Avenue South. Assuming that the culvert follows the original course, then it runs between the backs of gardens in Park Avenue South (south side) and Barrington Road (north side) before skirting Priory Park. I wonder whether the petanque players are aware of their proximity to this pollution!
