Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

There was something going on in the park today involving a bunch of people in cars with red, white and blue flags with candles on and drumming. Any idea what is was? They came from Green lanes

I came through Stamford Hill this afternoon and there seemed to be loads of Jewish kids in fancy dress, plus the cars with flags on.
Purim ?
Horrors !! A religious festival in the park :-o
Well, Purim it seems to have been.

I thought it might have been the Hindu spring festival of Holi, or Phagwah as Guyanese and Trinidadians call it. Lots of colours also with everyone getting sprayed with coloured dye. It's a national holiday in Guyana tomorrow.

Yes, John D - let's encourage more of these in FP!
John D... "Horrors !! A religious festival in the park :-o"
'Festival' = religious holiday. (Latin; Festivus) :-)
anne barwick. "I've done a search on striped flags with candles on and drawn a blank. The Esther/Vashti purim stories are interesting".
*Maybe it was a festival of festivals.
Mea culpa James. That's about as bad as "the hoi polloi " I'm ashamed.
John D. i learned from you - the master :-)
Saw that when I was walking through - the cars had two flags - one of which was the Kurdish flag. The other (blue with candle) flag is - I think - the flag of the Kurdish political party called Goran (Change) list. So my guess is that it was a political rally - there are regional elections in Iraq next week, so potentially ahead of that?
You're right Malcolm. There was a bit of a party at the bottom of Pemberton Road yesterday with lots of flags with candles, (and a big cake) I stopped to ask what it was about and was told that it was a launch of the 'Change Party' for the forthcoming Iraq elections.
