Railings and Planters - an update

I've just received the following message from the Council's traffic management service:

Dear Harringay Councillors and Ian Sygrave,

Thank you for attending the site visit on 3 March to review the pedestrian barriers along Harringay Passage.

The conclusion of the meeting was that only Falkland Road required barriers. Officers were tasked with investigating if planters could be fitted to the more decorative railings and if viable to consider replacing the temporary railings with the more decorative type.

I am pleased to inform that the result of our investigations is that we are able to fit planters to the decorative type of railings. We therefore propose to replace the temporary railings at Falkland Road with the more decorative type and fit planters to the exit end of the railings as discussed at the site meeting.

This work is programmed for completion by the end of April, please get back to me if you have any comments.

Glad to hear this David. Were there any discussions on a complete upgrade of the junction, including narrowing the road and improving sight lines?

Yes there were. I found little sympathy for narrowing of the road, their point being that this doesn't really slow traffic down. It is necessary to press the counter argument which is that whether or not the traffic is slowed, it will be safer if the area which is protected by railings protrudes further into the road, because that improves the sightlines for pedestrians and motorists alike. The other possible measure for improving sight lines, which is to remove a parking space on each side of the road, is something that we would need to consult about with the residents who are likely to be affected.

Hi David, thanks for letting us know about that. What happened to the suggestion to build brick planters at the Falkland Rd junction instead of metal railings? From the HoL and FoHP discussions it sounded like brick planters were prefered by most people rather than the ugly railings. At the last FoHP meeting there were even volunteers to build them so all we need is some money to buy the materials.

I think that where there are metal railings it is because there are post boxes. I have tried to suggest this twice at FoHP meetings but the attendees are all the kind who like to listen to their own voices: frustrating, local quasi-psychopaths not fit for LCSP meetings.
