Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

We have just returned from a couple of weeks in France and found our quince crop starting to drop. I picked some before we left and have already given some away and made 20 jars of quince chutney.  We also serve them as part of tray bakes and, no doubt a few more will go for quince jelly. However, we shall not be able to use them all.  The attached photo shows we have collected in the last two days and there are a couple of dozen more on the tree.

This lot are are ready and waiting for anyone who would like them.  Any takers?

Thank you! Hope you make something delicious!

I love membrillo! My partner is Argentinian and introduced me to it, over there it's quite a working class treat whereas I always associated "quince jelly" to be a posh thing here. I've also subscribed to your substack :)

Thanks so much! And how interesting about the class differences of quince consumption…

I would also love 3 or 4 if any still going! Will send connection request.

Hi, I'd really like a couple. Hope not too late?

I would love some if they’re available,

I would love some if they’re available,

Many thanks, Odette

Hi Dick, I’d like to take some - I love quince cheese! Thanks, Roger.

I have sent you a connection request.

It seems some have received connection requests and others haven't....

I have now sent you a connection request.

Thanks to Sally, Tessa, Maren and Christina's husband for taking some quinces yesterday. There are plenty more for anyone who wasn't available or hasn't yet responded.

For anyone who wonders what to do with a quince, I can tell you they are delicious when cooked.  The following web-site gives 8 recipes and we shall certainly try some of them.

8 quince recipes by Janine Ratcliffe

  1. Spiced baked quince with walnut crumble
  2. Quince-glazed ham with pineapple relish
  3. Quince-glazed cabbage with chorizo
  4. Pork belly and quince with sage and black pudding stuffing, and bor...
  5. Pork with quince sauce and watercress
  6. Bacon-wrapped dates with quince marmalade
  7. Quince and plum crumble
  8. Quince and honey cake

If I end up with unwanted quinces, I shall probably boil them in bulk to get syrup out of them.  This could be used to make jelly but I already have more than enough of that so I could try rendering the syrup down to see whether it leads to anything resembling the fruit molasses that I make from apples and pears.
