Following a discussion with David Lammy's researcher Nora Mulready this afternoon about setting up a meeting with law enforcement around the issue of women's personal safety following the three rapes in recent months in the area, I have offered to collate questions for the police that can be passed on in preparation for the meeting.
So far I have picked up 12 clear questions from the Street Harrassment reports thread which are attached as a document
Andy I'm not well paid but I get out more than you seem to imagine. I worry about the safety of all night-workers, such as a girl friend of mine, who uses public transport. The scorn heaped on the sensible advice of the policeman is misplaced. Calling the police "so utterly incompetent" does not help. The need to act wisely will continue after the attacker/s are caught.
Clive, reactionary statements such as "Individuals need to take personal responsibility for their lives, their lifestyles and their decisions – and not always blame others when their own choices lead to misadventure." therefore make no sense at all if you have near-ones at risk from the attackers roaming our streets at the moment.
In what way am I not helping by decrying the police's lack of results? Will the police officers involved read my comments and go off for a collective sulk and refuse to do their jobs until I tow a more conformist line?
I come from a long line of coppers and so I also know that the more you make a noise, the more they prioritize. I don't have a go at the police for fun, you know -I am criticizing exact elements of their pithy advice and their lack of real progress.
Sorry -they are paid to apprehend villains and they have failed to do so after many months and more rapes. I demand answers and it is also my legal right to demand results when my loved ones -and not to mention women in my community -are not only still at risk but also are not being made to feel safe.
You imply that the police will only act effectively when their own relations are involved.
Nope, I said that we'd see a better response and that's fact. We will try harder for a sibling/parent with whom we share 50% of our DNA than we do for a cousin with whom we share 25%. Less so for second cousins and even less so for friends (who may be related). People we feel no connection to we will not try very hard for at all. This is evolutionary biology so feel free to disagree if you're not into that.
and not always blame others when their own choices lead to misadventure.
Women earn money and pay taxes. Until things calm down they have a right to a promise of a more visible police presence on Green Lanes in the early hours. There are certainly enough young women around here with this "lifestyle" to justify the cost. Can you imagine the outcry if three MEN were beaten and sexually assaulted on Green Lanes late at night?
So are any of you up for joining a meeting with SNT to put these points to them?
You can mail me or Nora privately if you wish.
So far I have Lisa on this thread and another woman who has sent me a message, Nora and myself. I think if we are going to make it worthwhile we will need a few more
Liz, I think I should. This whole thing is directly affecting me and those I love -and rather than turning into an 'internet warrior' I'd much rather be a real voice for ears that need to hear. Could you email me the full information for the meeting? Many thanks.
When you get a meeting with the O-so-high-and-mighty borough commander let me know. I don't think our SNT team deserve to take any flak. We are being fobbed of with the NCOs.
I notice David Beckham had a police escort when he arrived at Manchester airport yesterday...
Liz, I'd like to join a meeting with SNT to put our points to them direct. We could vent for hours on here on how and why the borough commander's written statement falls short of what's needed. If the police won't come to us, we'll have to go to them.
You can go and see the SNT any time. You can even send them text messages and email them. I rather think "a spate of rapes" is borough commander stuff.
