Is there a way of voting against it |?

I am quite sympathetic to the ideas being mooted and the role of design in community building, but what made the organisers see fit to obliterate a schools/community mural in order to advertise this newer venture? It would be interesting to know if the school was consulted. In this light, this smacks of gentrification - which ultimately divides us.

I heard that they consulted the representatives for Chettle Court (whose residents designed and painted the mural in 2006) and were given their blessing to paint over it. I also heard that depending on how much they get from tesco they intend to use grant money to make a new mural. No doubt with input from the community.

The group behind the bid are kind community minded souls who in my humble opinion are trying to improve the area for those passing through and residents. If that's gentrification, I can't see why we shouldn't be in favour of it.
That's why you can vote! Unless of course you've lost your faith in democracy this last week.
Well for me, I'm not in favour of it because it is a really poor design. Those metal cubes will be filled with discarded litter and covered in locked bicycles.

Thanks that's very helpful.

And what will happen if "the community" doesn't get the Tesco money, will we be left with this vandalised mural?  I hope that the organisers of this then have to dip into their own pockets to repaint it.

As for the group behind the bid being kind community minded souls.  I get the impression that Matt Bracken who owns But First Coffee is pushing for this "regeneration".  I'm a bit of a cynical soul and wonder what would be in it for him.  I suppose it would be nothing to do with the fact that seating will be provided, very useful in the summer when his customers can take their purchases and sit in the "community" area.  Perhaps we might even have a waiter service?

Oh for gods sake folks stop being so negative. This is a great idea. So what if a small independent business will benefi I'm sure all the local businesses will in some way benefit and no doubt make sure it's free of litter. If you feel that other parts of the borough need some micro regeneration go get of your botty and do something about it, Just like these Quernmore folk..

Let me find the page in TRTP where the businessmen try to get the corporation (council) to turn over public land to them and pay for improvements on it so that they may profit...

Now let's say a local group thought that they could, with permission from the council, do some gardening and putting of planters along the passage. Would you describe them as having gotten off their botties? There's a lot more to this than meets the eye. Just try doing it if you're not a business for a start *glares at all the planters blocking the footpath along Green Lanes*.

The problem with this project is that no one bothered asking "the community" what they thought about this (the design of the seating, the painting over of part of the mural) before bidding for the Tesco money.  Once the unelected committee (who exactly?) had decided to act, and before they submitted their bid, they should have sought the opinion of us locals, but no, the first that most people knew was when they saw the painted over mural or read one of the leaflets (who designed and paid for these?), or read the other discussion on HoL.

The Stroud Green Residents Association (SGRA) was according to Kit represented on the committee, but were SGRA members informed/consulted on the plans - no.  The first message about the bid wasn't until 25 October.  It would have been very easy for SGRA to have circulated details of the plans to members for comment prior to the unelected committee going ahead with the bid.

"  local businesses will in some way benefit and no doubt make sure it's free of litter. "

Just like on Green Lanes then ?
