Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Bikebiz magazine has estimated that London’s public transport capacity could potentially run at a fifth of pre-lockdown levels. This would mean up to eight million journeys a day would need to be made by other means. If people switch only a fraction of these journeys to cars, our streets are going to get very gnarly.

On Friday last week, the Mayor of London announced a radical solution – the Street Space plan which will fast track the transformation of London’s streets to enable millions more people to safely walk and cycle as part of their daily journeys.

Sadiq said ‘Londoners will rightly demand neighbourhoods that permanently work for walking and cycling’. At the same time Boris Johnson also called on regional leaders to encourage people to commute on foot or bike to avoid a dramatic increase in car use.

It is understood that dialogue is happening between TFL, the GLA and Haringey Council for accessing additional funding and assistance to put in place temporary measures.

Any ideas for what that should look like in Harringay?

If thats ever going to happen now must surely be a big opportunity. And we should get off our bums ASAP to try again to make it happen. Pessimistically, if we don't Harringay could miss out or even worse.

The new Streetspace plan wants a rapid complete transformation of local town centres and high streets to facilitate a local economic recovery, with people having space to queue for shops as well as enough space for others to safely walk past while socially distancing, along with reducing traffic on residential streets, creating low-traffic neighbourhoods.

Left to themselves our wonderful council could:
Transform local town centres and high streets: close Wood Green High Rd
Reducing traffic on residential streets and creating low-traffic neighbourhoods: push through Liveable Crouch End
Harringay: well the footpath by Iceland has been widened already, so job done.

If they're shutting Wood Green High Road maybe we could send all the traffic through the industrial estate... the Wood Green Bypass might yet come to fruition after all - only a few decades late 

Green Lanes should have an all hours southbound bus/cycle lane and northbound cycle lane. This can be achieved in a day with a lick of paint.

Afterwards it could be made permanent along with widening the footpaths, since the northbound cycle lane won't actually need all the space that is currently there. This would also make dining and shopping a much more pleasant experience

Change the council to one that has an appetite to make change? We do seem to have the most car-friendly council in London, sandwiched between two councils who are pro-active and environmentally friendly, while our residents are less likely to own a car than most London residents. It's a dichotomy that makes no sense to me. Filtering Wightman says everyone. Never. Never, ever... says the council. 

The picture looks nice but remember what happens to Duckets Common when the police don't patrol it all the time - gets covered with litter and full of substance mis-users and the homeless who have nowhere to go in the day time.  Soon becomes a no-go area for locals.  No thanks unless police presence is guaranteed. 

Green Lanes - for a while there it was quiet, transformed.  Slowly but inexorably returning to normal now - ie busy with lots of people on the pavements, lots of traffic on the street, the restrictions may still be in place but many people seem to be acting as if they aren't. The worst queues to negotiate are outside the 'new' Post Office. That Post Office was bad enough before social distancing - now it's impossible - severely understaffed - and don't send parcels (any size) by post - twice I've had small parcels take more than 10 days to arrive by Royal Mail.  Hermes takes 2-3 days.

Music and Beans is doing takeaway good coffee - hurray. Such a treat after weeks with no cappucino.

Some of the locals don't seem to have any concept of 2m social distancing though.  I've had to put up my hand and say 'TWO METRES PLEASE' quite a few times in Green Lanes.

Yes I commented on this forum a couple of weeks ago how many people on Green Lanes have no understanding of 2metres! I do the same as you about putting my hand out and saying 2 metres but people just seem totally oblivious. Staff in some of the local shops also seem to be totally unaware which is why I now try to avoid going there as much as I can

Yes me too. I rarely go to local shops now as both staff and some customers seem oblivious to social distancing.  I would like to support them but ...

It unfortunately seems safer to use the big chains where the rules for our safety are enforced. 

Now with Boris's latest ridiculous vague pronouncements I predict total meltdown on safety standards in Green Lanes. 

Yes I haven't been since then so don't know but I don't have high hopes. Like you I stick to the big chains where they obviously feel more obliged to be seen to be following the rules to protect their name. They are not perfect either but I feel safer than in the local shops here
