Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

PEOPLE caught short while out and about in Haringey may be able to use toilets in cafes and restaurants - if the council has its way.

Haringey Council wants to work with businesses to make their toilets available for public use
At the moment there are just eight public toilets operated across the borough.

In October the community and local government select committee called for local authorities to reverse a national decline in the number of public toilets - estimated at 40 per cent in the last eight years.

The committee recommended each borough develop a "public toilet strategy" in consultation with residents.

Personally as the parent of small children I would welcome this, although I have found most cafes are pretty accommodating to children if you ask. Older people and those with medical conditions may not find it so easy though. A simple sign in a window saying that non customers are able to spend a penny would help a lot.
I can't see businesses being very enthusiastic about this. Many users of public toilets, eg the one in St Annes Rd, leave the facilities in a disgusting state with toilet paper strewn around, stuffed into the hand-washing bowls etc. Others use the cubicles to take drugs or even just to sleep off booze. Another example of the council trying to slide out of their responsibilities.

I love the bit in the news item about "the bottom line " :-)
So I could potentially risk sharing a toilet with the mad rasta-alkie that hangs out on Green Lanes if I ventured in to the Salisbury or Garden ladder for a nice drink? I DON'T THINK SO!

Stupid idea, and a complete cop-out.
What about a sign that said something like, parents of young children and citizens of the third age welcome? Could state only available between say 9 and 5, maybe.
Or even an opt in scheme, where we could have some kind of card that gave people access to certain establishments that also opt in?
The 'mad alkies' can continue to use the numerous bookies where I am reliably informed via FaceBook that the toilet paper is of a high quality.
