Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Psychology Research: can you spare 5 minutes to fill in a questionnaire?

Hello

I hope this is the right area for this kind of post -- please redirect me, if it isn't

As part of my postgraduate project, I'm researching individual attitudes to charitable giving and, in particular, to the issues raised by the thought experiment of the drowning child (see below, if you're interested).

In order to examine these issues in more detail, information about the views of different people is invaluable. If you have 5 minutes to spare to complete my questionnaire, your contribution would make a big difference to my project.

Unfortunately, I can't offer anything in return apart from a very large amount of gratitude and as much information about the field of altruism research as you could ever (or never!) want.

If you have any questions or comments, I'd be happy to respond to them.

The questionnaire can be found at:

Thank you very much

The Paradox of the Drowning Child

The first part of the thought experiment asks you to imagine that, on your way to work, you see a child drowning in a pool of water. The water is shallow and you could safely wade in and pull the child out. But the water is muddy and would ruin your new £200 pair of shoes. Do you save the child by wading into the pool?

The second part of the thought experiment asks you to imagine the same child at risk of death. Again you could save the child at a cost of £200 and no risk to your personal safety. However, this time the child is thousands of miles away in a different country, and the £200 takes the form of a charitable donation, rather than a ruined pair of shoes. Do you save the child by donating the money?

If you are like most people, you answered yes to the first question and no to the second. Understanding the thoughts and feelings underlying these contrary answers has the potential to illuminate both charitable giving in particular and altruistic behaviour in general.

Done.-didn't take me 2 minutes even...good luck in your studies & research

Thanks very much!

And thanks to everyone else who has *ahem* charitably given their time so far. My number of participants has tripled since I made this post. Harringay seems to be a paragon of exactly the type of prosocial behaviour I'm studying  I'm very grateful!
