Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Tonight at 12.20 am   BBC2  Just spotted this, repeat.  Or on iplayer.

"It costs more than £1billion every year to clean up Britain's rubbish, much of which comes from people's love of fast food, soft drinks and sweets. A number of people seem unwilling to pick up after themselves - or their pets - and their discarded rubbish still gets many hot under the collar. Joan Bakewell explores the problem, arguing that Brits need to take more pride in their surroundings and examining whether enough really is being done to clean up. She tours the country meeting groups trying to help, confronting litter louts and even goes walkies with a dog-mess patrol."

So we can all shout at the screen in unison.

Well it beats the repeats of Halloween 7

It's not rocket science. Tax all sales with the cost of disposal, then use the money to (a)  pay a bounty for rubbish delivered to the waste facility, or (b) pay for additional rubbish collecting and street cleaning.

We need to push the cost of dealing with waste far enough that it's considered before something is bought. Any later than that and it's just about moving things around. Making it ever harder to get rid of rubbish without discouraging accumulating it in the first place is a recipe for fly tipping.
