Poor TV signal in N15 anyone?
Hi all, since moving to N15 a couple of months ago we haven't been able to watch any live TV through our Youview box provided by Talk Talk. The problem seems to be poor or lost signal. I was wondering if anybody has had the same issue? has anybody successfully resolved it and if yes, how? Maybe an indoor aerial?

Doesn't answer the question- do you have a good ( preferably outside ) aerial ? You could try an indoor aerial although that would be expected to give results inferior to an outside one. Another thing to try would be to re-tune the box by going to the setup or install menu.

Sorry John if I wasn't clear - yes we have a communal rooftop aerial and we are definitely connected to it as we do occasionally manage to see some live TV (for about half an hour this morning, then the signal dropped from 25% to 0%!!). I have been re-tuning the box on a daily basis, but it doesn't solve the problem. Can't believe we are the only ones with this problem? if we are then it must be a problem with the aerial... :-/

If it's a roof aerial you are trying to connect over, you can more or less give up for good in some parts of N15. When we moved in (Heysham Rd) we had one aerial replaced with a brand new one installed by a specialist, only to be told that it was impossible to pick up a signal even with state of the art kit in this part of London.
It's not your aerial, it is most probably the lack of coverage locally. I'm afraid that the only solution is a satellite dish or cable. We have freesat now via dish on the roof.

why does the UK digital website state that I should get 80+ channels then? If there is no coverage then they should say so!
I think our block has a communal satellite dish but we are tied in a contract with Talk Talk for a while now... how do we go about this? Surely if we have no signal we have the right to terminate the contract? I am very p***ed off and also annoyed with myself for not doing my research properly!

No idea I'm afraid - it's possible our problem was very localised, but it did take several attempts for them to tell us there simply wasn't good enough coverage. It's possible of course they were talking rubbish...

It may just be that your current aerial is broken or out of alignment. Can you ask your neighbours if they get reception?
This site will tell you the best aerial type and direction for your postcode. It can't predict interference from local buildings etc but its a good start.

When we moved in (N15 as well) we had no reception from the existing aerial. We bought the type recommended on wolfbane , tested it in the attic and found we got perfect reception just mounting it in the attic.
(Then I never got round to running the cable and we get Virgin instead. But the aerial reception was fine :) )

we have raised the issue with the housing association (who owns and manages the block) to check for any issues with the aerial. They take their time though to answer these things!
I have checked on the website YOU suggested and the recommendation for the Crystal Palace transmitter is "set-top", which we obviously have. Then it recommends "log-periodic" for the Ally Pally transmitter and "Amplified extra hi-gain" for all the other transmitters. What does it mean?? I am a bit at a loss TBH :-\!

Celia* Your housing association is obliged to maintain the communal aerial for your block along with all other fixtures and fittings. That's why you pay rent and maintanence fees, it's them you should get on to. Ask to speak to the CEO and ask them what their policy is on maintenance. Mention the housing ombudsman, that'l geee them up. if this fails tell them you will hire a private contractor to inspect the aerial and that you will invoice the housing association for costs. good luck.

Forget " all the other transmitters ". In North London your aerial should be looking at either Alexandra Palace ( intended as a fill in for Hornsey and Crouch End but possible for Tottenham ) or Crystal Palace. If you like, I could get hold of a Freeview set top box and come round and check for you.
