Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

I have been a way for a few weeks and am wondering when the bellowing announcements emanating from Green Lanes train station began?

They are extremely loud and be heard from inside my house a few hundred meters away.

I am not sure if the announcements are coming from the trains as doors are open or whether they are from speakers on the platform.

Does anyone know of any regulation or policy in place to protect residents from this type of noise pollution?

No, but the first thing is probably to track down who is responsible for managing the station. It's possible that they're not aware of the problem they're causing. (Here's the contact for the MD of London Overground as a place to start - or you could drop by and have a word with the station staff).

If that doesn't work, you could see if Haringey's noise team can help - lots of good words for them on her over the years. Finally, try your local councillors, GLA member (who has a brief on transport within the GLA) or your MP. (See our democratic representatives contacts page)

I have recently been disturbed by these announcements but not every day so maybe there is someone who works there sometimes who turns up the volume. I was surprised how loud they had become that even with windows closed and music on, I could still hear them. Thanks for these links Hugh. next time I hear overly loud announcements, I am gonna contact someone to get them turned down. Its bad enough being shouted at on the buses by too-loud announcements but not in your own home!
Don't get your hopes up. I've been complaining for years about overloud announcements on tube trains and platforms and got nowhere. I managed to speak to someone at the tube who said that personally he agreed with me but didn't think anything would be done.

The level is probably designed to get through to young people who have destroyed their hearing going clubbing and wearing Ipods :-)
John, I dont think the younger generation have done their hearing in yet- takes quite a while! More likely to be my generation who were the first to have Sony walkmans. I used to go to bed with mine on playing loudly and only stopped that when nearly strangled myself on the wire once... And we were hardcore clubbers before anyone had heard of techno...
No matter who its aimed at, its reaching people streets away. I like the nicer longer trains and improved station but not this. Am contacting suggested people now.
Ta Alan for the other contact
Stan and Ruth, while endorsing Hugh's advice can I suggest that in particular you copy-in Joanne McCartney, London Assembly member for Enfield and Haringey. Joanne has been very active in taking up transport issues.
joanne.mccartney@london.gov.uk
Done! and Joanne McCartney copied in. I feel increasingly under siege... on the other side of my flat, kitchen and bedroom I have opposite neighbour's intense security light shining directly in, feel like I am in the gulag, on and off all night. Now this noise on the other side.....
We have been battling the announcements for some time. Up until a few months back if they got too loud my partner would call the very obliging customer services and they'd be turned down fairly pronto. You don't mess with my partner!
Just recently it has been a bit different. The announcements are too loud even on the platform in my opinion. We have been told that it is a new system that has been installed and it's just problem ridden. We are assured they are trying to sort it out and are using our complaints as a 'model case'. We work from home a lot and can practically recite the announcements now. Believe me we won't let this go.
I'm glad you and your partner are on the case Jimbo. The more the better. I sent off my complaints today. Imagine how it will be warm weather with windows open! ridiculous. They are too loud on the platform, you are right. I also work at home a lot and its so irritating.
Thanks Adrian.
I dont have that app but if anyone does, please record it. Seems quieter today, maybe they've turned down already. I got responses saying it was being looked into.
If you want this sorted, you go the the very conspicuous (bright orange!) Overground House, which is right outside Swiss Cottage tube station, and you politely kick up a stink until they send someone senior out to speak to you. And it isn't sorted, you go back again. And again. And again.

Alternative actions include emailing a dead-end mailbox at TfL (who don't even directly run the thing), hassling a powerless minimum wage employee on the platform, or downloading an iPhone app (!) for some reason. These will certainly soak up your time and energy, but have the downside of having to live with loud announcements for the rest of your natural life. It's your call.
I think Mr Thant's and other posts highlight some important issues. Here's a private company (on quasi-publicly owned premises) running its business in a way which a number of nearby residents find a bloody nuisance. Polite requests to the staff work - but only temporarily. Staff explain that there's a system problem - the new PA system.

People suggest various possible routes to a solution: informal; bureaucratic; political; an iphone app. Plus direct action ─ being a bloody nuisance for the train company until they solve this problem.

Or not. Mr Thant suspects none of the above may work ─ while soaking up a great deal of time and effort.

At the risk of seeming a bit over-theoretical, can I ask if anyone has come across John Gaventa and his views about invisible, hidden power and internalised powerlessness?

Alan considering the number of books you've recommended down the years, I reckon you've missed your calling as a librarian. I'm still struggling with your first dozen reading lists!

internalised (and externalised) powerlessness
