Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

As many of you may know Haringey Council are planning major development for Wood Green Town Centre. This includes the creation of a new "primary route” for traffic to bypass the Wood Green Town Centre by funnelling traffic up and down Station Road and Mary Neuner Road. This will lead directly into Wightman Road and the Ladder.

The document here gives information, links and an email address for comments to Haringey Council; it also provides a cut-off-and-post letter.

The Council DEADLINE FOR COMMENTS is 31 March - THIS FRIDAY!

Please act and protect our streets from even more traffic!

Full details of the council's "action plan" are available here

Thank you!

The question I had about the draft email you so kindly prepared and LW's initiative here is -- should mention be made to the shopping centre people at the council this is addressed to of the traffic study and the proposals on the table for Wightman Road? There may be a right hand/ left hand issue as the Wood Green plan seems like it could run counter to the "medium list" proposals the traffic study has published.

(Or would this be worse as the economic development would get in the driver's seat and the traffic initiative as concerns Wightman Road (but not only) be made to conform with the Wood Green development?)

For what it's worth, as a cyclist Wightman Road is the worst part of the ride in terms of fear for my life and the pollution from vehicles, probably as they have to power themselves to get up the hills and from gunning it to thread the needle so as to pass the cyclists before the traffic islands (always nearly clipping me in the process). It just sucks frankly and I hope your group has some success.

This is a once in a lifetime chance to drive real change here in terms of traffic and pollution reduction. Its really important that as many Ladder residents as possible respond in no uncertain terms that a primary route which will run straight up Wightman Road (and as a consequence use all the ladder roads) is absolutely unacceptable. I welcome some of the ideas in the Wood Green plan but not if Harringay pays the price. As Knavel says, Wightman Road is the worse part of every cyclist's journey. I cycle to the city and back every day and the worse and most dangerous part of the journey is right outside my own front door! Those lethal traffic islands have to go at any cost.

And please ladder residents, don't let them divide and conquer by offering a one way way Wightman and only a couple of east/west ladder (loser) roads open to through traffic. It's what they ideally want. Hang together with Wightman or surely some of you will be hung on your own.

I didn't glean that the solution was to block through access to most(?) ladder roads save for a few. I thought it was one way on Wightman but keep the ladder roads more or less as they are now. Did the consultation documents say who the "loser" ladder roads would be?

It's all going to be a secret but we know exactly what they want, a Wood Green bypass and three Labour councillors.

Done. Thank you.

Here is what I wrote in case anyone wants to use any of it for themselves:

Dear Sirs

I am a resident in Harringay, in_________.  I have reviewed the Haringey Council's Area Action Plan for Wood Green published February 2017 (Plan).

The map published on page 74 of the Plan with the blue lines and arrows is of serious concern, particularly where it would designate WIGHTMAN ROAD as a principal thoroughfare for ingress / egress / or both, to Wood Green.

Wightman Road cannot handle its current high volume of traffic, let alone such an increase that presumptively would occur on the basis that Wood Green becomes the Stratford of North London, so to speak.

At present as a cyclist who uses the road daily, Wightman Road is absolutely the most dangerous and most polluted part of my entire commute to the City:

First, Wightman's kerbs have been commandeered for car parking spaces that straddle onto the road, often on both sides of the road. Because of the squeeze this creates, the vehicles have to accelerate greatly to pass--hence the enhanced pollution, which is further added to by the fact that the acceleration is often performed on an uphill gradient. Then the vehicles nearly clip me since they have to swerve into ongoing traffic to pass and dart back into our lane quickly.

With the status quo, it is hard for me to imagine what the result would be if Wightman Road was presented and set up for use as a main road in and/ or out of Wood Green both in terms of the danger for cyclist and pedestrians, and for the pollution level, as it is already the most polluted road in London that I am aware of.

For these reasons in particular I object to the Plan as concerns Wightman Road on the strongest terms.

Thank you for your consideration of my concerns.

Yours faithfully

Your opening line would have wound them up no end. Just refer to yourself as living on the ladder when you speak to the council.

...assuming the read it. Which is a big assumption.

Thank you for the reminder.  It has been sitting on my kitchen table for weeks so good to get reminded in time!

Dear All

The consultation has now been  extended until April 28. It is really important to get as many responses as possible since the plans should be amended in the light of responses. Ultimately everything goes to an independent Panning Inspector appointed by the Government to review the documentation and hold what is called an Examination in Public.(EiP).

So the more comments and observations by local people the better, so the inspector can see the concerns people have. The EiP is held in public and people can make representations to the inspector. The inspector can modify plans so if you think there are problems please comment and submit your views.

Zena Brabazon

Cllr, Harringay Ward

My understanding is that these primary routes are actually primary pedestrian routes and not vehicular routes
