Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

As mentioned in the thread about landfill waste here, I would like to set up a community group for people who are interested in trying to tackle the problem of plastic waste. As far as I know, there is a sustainability group in Muswell Hill but there doesn’t seem to be one in Harringay.

The main aims of this group would be:

  • To share tips and advice on ways to reduce waste in our daily lives, e.g. by switching to plastic-free/reusable/DIY alternatives
  • To work together to encourage local businesses around Green Lanes to reduce unnecessary waste and provide sustainable options to customers

The above are just my initial thoughts and other suggestions are welcome. If this sounds of interest, I would like to set up an initial meeting somewhere on Green Lanes - please could you complete this Doodle poll so I can arrange a suitable date and place!

Thanks,
Alice

Awesome idea.

I'd like to get involved. My availability against your poll times isn't great, so don't hold things up for me, but I'd like to stay in touch on this regardless!

What a great idea. I've completed the doodle poll and will send you a connection request.

Thanks to all who completed the poll! It looks like the most popular time is this Saturday 8th at 11am so I suggest we meet at Beans and Barley (there are 4 of us at the moment).

I have created a Facebook group (link below) for those who’d like to get involved so please do join that if you can – I know not everyone will be on Facebook but it seemed like the easiest way to keep track of things! I will continue to post updates on here too.

Looking forward to meeting some of you on Saturday!

Thank you for organising this. See you there

Hi - I'm sorry I'm not going to be able to make it, but really excited to get involved more generally.

would love to join too. Unfortunately, I cannot make this Saturday as there is a Homes for Haringey meeting but would like to attend future meetings :)

A bit like a couple of others I think this is a really good idea but I cannot make Sat. I have sent a connection request with my details so w can stay in touch/involved.

I think the sort of information we can share include on a practical basis include the fact that black plastic is very difficult to recycle. I never knew that... I have some much I want answers to others likely have (or something similar) that I hope as group we can share, and disseminate. These include:

  • Just how clean does your plastic waste have to be before recycling (really- does it need to be clean and is that not done as part of the recycling process?)
  • I have a radio with one of those fat plug with a transformer in it. If it is left plugged in to the wall socket and the plug turned on but the radio turned off is it still using power at the same rate as though the radio is actually on???

The lack of information on these questions and others are constant barriers to me and likely others doing the right thing...

Dear Alice, the Muswell Hill Sustainability Group has been running a plastics campaign over the summer - asking people to pledge to stop using single use plastic items like plastic bags, coffee cups etc. They have held a series of stalls and now have 570 pledges! They have also been encourging local restaurants to join the Refill campaign (allowing people to fill water bottles for free in their premises).
Tottenham and Wood Green Friends of the Earth has also been talking to local takeaway food outlets (Wood Green and Seven Sisters) asking them to consider using paper over plastic products. They will have a stall at the Tottenham Produce Show on 15th Sept in Lordship Rec. They would like to see a borough wide campaign (using the Surfers Against Sewage template) and get the Council to sign up to going plastic free on its premises and in schools.
Transition Crouch End has also shown a film about plastic in the sea fairly recently.
The Sustainable Haringey Network tries to keep groups working on sustainbility in touch - but we are not being very active at the moment! This is our website https://sustainableharingey.wordpress.com/
A group in Harringey would be very welcome.
Best wishes Pamela
Don't forget about Sustainable Haringey, who already have a group working on re-cycling plastic waste locally. Or Friends of the Earth who have a local group also [foe.co.uk/tottenhamandwoodgreen] Let's do this together!

There are three of us sitting by the entrance of beans and barley for anyone who is on their way this morning.

so sorry, won't be able to meet this morning but still interested.
