Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

From the HFRA:

Planning & Development in Haringey - A Residents Conference

Saturday April 17th
Hornsey Vale Community Centre, 60 Mayfield Road, N8 9LP

The Council is about to consult over its new ‘Local Development Framework’. We’ll have just 6 wks to influence Haringey’s future!

Are you concerned about...
- over-development and new skyscrapers; advertising hoardings everywhere; loss of Haringey's heritage and character; threats to green spaces; the selling off of community facilities and local pubs; and too much traffic?

Would you like to see...
- genuinely affordable housing; good quality local jobs; safer, greener and more friendly local streets and better public transport; more allotment sites; protection of public land and services, and of small independent shops; and the long term sustainability of our society?

What can we do?
-
we believe that those who live and work in Haringey should have the maximum possible say over planning and development policies and practices that affect our lives, our communities and our neighbourhoods. Why not come and see what we can do about this, together!

There will be presentations (including from the Council's LDF planning team), and also discussions on how we as residents can influence the borough's planning policies, currently being re-written and about to undergo 6 wks public consultation (exact dates not yet decided). What are the policies, what changes would we like to see, and how can local people respond with their views?

Conference called by the Haringey Federation of Residents Associations - supported by the Sustainable Haringey network, Haringey Friends of Parks Forum, Conservation Area Advisory Committees, Tottenham Civic Society and other local community organisations

-  All welcome. If possible please let us know in advance that you aim to attend.

Planning & Development in Haringey - time to speak out!

Why now?   The Council is preparing new planning and development policies, known as the Local Development Framework [LDF] Core Strategy. The LDF is almost certainly going out for public consultation from April 19th until May 28th 2010. The consultation documents (when finally approved for consultation by the Council's Cabinet on March 23rd) will set out policy proposals on how the borough will manage issues of housing, climate change, transport, employment, leisure, retail, open space, and design from 2011 to 2026.

This is a new process and we all need to get on top of it! More information, and the previous LDF draft documents can be found at: www.haringey.gov.uk/corestrategy

Sustainable communities - and developers   Everyone now recognises that we must have environmentally and socially sustainable communities throughout Haringey, and indeed London.

We are facing extreme pressures from private and corporate developers and town planners leading to a range of concerns & problems, and pressure on an already inadequate social infrastructure (schools, health facilities, parks, public transport, community centres and other facilities etc). Some policies supposedly meant to protect the interests of communities are being systematically flouted.

Faced with constant pressures for inappropriate or damaging development, residents want to ensure that all residents and future generations will live in strong and sustainable communities.

Throughout Haringey there are an ever-growing number of residents’ objections, controversies and campaigns over proposed local developments. Residents groups and associations are forming more and more alliances to resist what’s wrong with major developments, eg Haringey Heartlands (Wood Green), Wards Corner (Seven Sisters), Tottenham Hale, Crouch End Open Spaces, and Lawrence Road (Central Tottenham)- as well as smaller but equally important sites in our local neighbourhoods.

Hence we need to look at the reality of how current policies are actually working on the ground.

What concerns have local residents raised in recent years?

*
loss of heritage and conservation features  * unwanted over-development
* over-intense housing development   * vast majority of housing built is unaffordable to people in need
* poor quality of interior and exterior housing design   * loss of valued ‘backlands’ sites
* loss of undesignated but important open space  * failure to address open space deficiencies
* lack of children’s play facilities   *  loss of community facilities * loss of publicly-owned land
* loss of affordable offices and sites for voluntary groups and small businesses
* stress and competition over availability of land generally in the borough   * loss of front gardens
* environmentally unsustainable development

  * increasing pollution - visual, air and noise
* illegal advertising hoardings and billboards   * street clutter   * increasing traffic
* lack of resources for public facilities, buildings & services

The conference will discuss what we can do to try to get the policies and practices that will really benefit the people of Haringey. The aims will be to:

- explain the LDF documentation and process
- identify the key areas of potential concern and controversy
- encourage networking and co-ordination among concerned individuals and community organisations
