Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Only two applications for our area this week and both of those are applications to convert 1st floor "offices" in the Salisbury to apartments.

I guess that's game over for the remaining features of the ballroom/concert hall which are apparently still up there then... what a shame.

Just checked the building's listing at English Heritage and it has this description of the first floor:

First floor: large room at the front, formerly a restaurant and concert room. Elaborate, compartmented ceiling with ornate fibrous plasterwork, all by the Mural Decoration Company. Engraved glass by Cakebread & Robey, inserted into doors separating off the residential part of the building.

I saw it very briefly a couple of years ago and seem to remember one room that looked original and one that had been messed around with
Looked at the planning application, and there doesn't appear to be any mention of changing the ceiling - and the front room's going to be partitioned by not-all-the-way-to-the-ceiling walls, so perhaps they're making the most of the period features in the conversion.

It's a shame that this is probably the death-knell for it ever becoming a public space again, but the pragmatist in me is happy that at least someone may get to enjoy it as potentially an impressive (and really quite large) flat. Maybe better that then it standing empty or being used as "office space". Mr Growbag might be tempted, were it not for the definite lack of anything resembling a garden, and it being right over a pub (albeit a very good pub)...

Are English Heritage aware of the application? Anyone spoken to them?
People hate change but everything must evolve. Any mention of developing "The Coliseum" brought out a spurt of negative reaction until a rotten rat infested wreck was destroyed forever. Maybe it is time to be happy with having the facade and the majority of the original bar.
I'm not sure English Heritage have a role at this stage, Peter. However, if you look at the planning application history in the application, you'll see that Haringey appear to have been extremely cautious in granting any applications on this building. So it appears that they are taking their responsibility to protect this historic building pretty seriously as far as the planning application process is concerned.
English Heritage are statutory consultees for any proposals to alter a listed building. Problem is that the listing rarely covers internal decoration unless it is exceptional.
Thanks for the knowledge-based input there Michael. Does the listing description tell us what the listing covers. or is there another level that reveals that?
Ahh! There's the problem. The listing description is by its nature normally quite a brief document. Here is an example of how we do it on our site at work. It would be almost impossibel to detail everything for the lsiting is used as an aid for the planner when making a decsion rather than as a checklist.
