Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!
perhaps we should start recycling
at the moment we have two large wheelie bins collected every week. we don't recycle. but we do use all the kitchen waste to make our own compost. To avoid having 4 bins i suppose we could start using one for recyclables and one for landfill, but would the council empty the wheelie bin on a recycling day?? or would we have to apply for lots and lots of little boxes??
does anyone know of a private rubbish collector?

we don't go out to the bins every time we throw a bit of rubbish away. we put it all in one big kitchen bin and then empty that. Having to delve through it sorting rubbish does not appeal. And having multiple rubbish bins in the house is not good, unsightly and takes up room

I think we're about to get large wheelie bins for recycling anyway, as the council is moving over to fortnightly rubbish collection and weekly recycling. As someone who got used to lugging bottles to the bottle bank many years ago, I'm always astounded when people seem to have difficulty separating waste when it is actually collected from outside your door. it's a minor inconvenience at most.

Just have two smaller bins in the kitchen - one for recyclables and one for rubbish. And then take them outside and decant them into the wheelie bin and recycling box. the recycling box is a bit small but you can get more than one and it doesn't matter if they are too full for the lid to go on anyway.
That's what we do. It's not particularly taxing.
They are switching over to a green wheelie bin for recycling (weekly) and a black wheelie bin for rubbish (fortnightly) later this year anyway.
Can't you be fined for not recycling anyway?

As others say, it's really not that difficult to recycle.
We have 2 green boxes outside (provided free by the council). I put anything that needs recycling in an old biscuit tin which is near the kitchen sink and then just take it out to the right boxes when it starts to pile up a bit.
We use only one black bin bag per week.

Brilliant idea. They could have the parking wardens as they patrol the streets looking for badly parked cars to also rummage around in bins and slap on fixed penalty notices when they come across any misplaced rubbish.
Just think of all the extra income that would bring in...

our one bin is on a slide out rack in the cupboards. We have a caddy under the sink for compost. i just have nowhere to put a third bin. Some boroughs fine for not recycling but i did not think Harringey did.
really makes me cross that someone on the council is trying to dictate how i organise my kitchen.

I do not want piles of rubbish laying around. I don't have a spotless house but I try to keep it reasonably clear. I don't keep the bins near the house--too unsightly so trekking down the path with bits and pieces of rubbish is not on--and why should i do it anyway. It all gets burned and turned into electricity, so its not adding to the landfill.

yes, burning rubbish is much more environmentally friendly than recycling.
