Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

We've just got back from being away and found our neighbor has started building an outbuilding / dwelling in the backyard which seems to resemble the beginnings of a fairly habitable (large) space!

I was under the impression a detached dwelling in a backyard is only available for general use i.e. an office, gym etc. and definitely can't be intended for sleeping...

Can someone point me in the direction of the rules for uses for a detached dwelling, specifically in Harringay?

I think you would be wise to speak to the Planning Enforcement team (020 8489 1000). There has been a relaxation on things like rear extensions but even with new temporary permitted development rights (until May 2016) the person carrying out the development must use the prior notification process to let Haringey know what they intend to do before they start work and Haringey should then write to immediate neighbours to find out if they object. We let one slip by us on our road a few years ago and as a consequence have what is in reality a second house in a back garden.

If you want to go under the radar, Mr McD, approach Planning via your councillor. The Planning Dept won't accept anonymous complaints and won't keep your details hidden.

Great tip! Thanks Hugh.

If its not a dwelling i thought height was the main consideration?
