Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

On my run yesterday I noticed that a couple of roads had on street bike sheds. They seem like such a great idea as currently I have to lug my bike through the house - which is particularly rubbish when it is wet and muddy outside.

These seem like such a great idea to give safe storage and encourage more people to cycle - getting healthier and reducing the traffic on the roads.

How can we get more?

I would love one but just how secure are they? Any thoughts on the risks of them being broken into?

Well as I understand it the idea is that you still lock your individual bike to a rack inside so the exterior is a second line of defence which has to be better than just one. I wouldn't leave a bike in there unlocked knowing 5/6 other people also have the key. I think the pod does offer protection from the elements, seat and wheel thieves etc.

There was an attempt to break into the first one in the gardens (cutting the side panel), they have since put in a couple of extra metal bars on the side.

They seem pretty secure, though the contract also says that bikes should be locked inside to.

Given that cars are routinely broken in to I'm constantly surprised about the extent of concerns I hear about the idea of cycle hangers attracting crime. Cars are the real crime magnets....

Note that this issue also comes up in decisions re siting, in particular how much they should be overlooked by houses vs the risks of them being sited in quite/clearer locations.

Hopefully the question was not interpreted as anything but a genuine query- not trying to flag that the hanger is a crime magnet. At the mo my bikes are at the back of the house and they are a pain to get out through the house- they are there because my last lot of bikes got nicked from out the front of the house...

They could put a couple on the bridge, it would be a good idea to have something there to stop it being used for "other activities" and the noise would probably disturb me less than the pimps and prossies.

Which street are you talking about?

Pemberton (was responding to comment about having one on Pemberton)

I was just checking as I am genuinely horrified! We have lived on Pemberton for 3 years now and haven't noticed anything like this. Really terrible... Maybe not the best place for bike storage then...

Yes I have lived on this road for about 3 years too (nearby for 20) and I get full view of the various activities that go on on the bridge from my sitting room window, it's like street theatre sometimes. The young lady in the burgundy dressing gown that likes to get in and out of parked cars and vans late at night. Not to mention the couple in the white soft-top BMW that like to park there late at night at weekends (such a romantic spot, next to our bins). I don't care what people get up to, but the used condoms on the pavement aren't very nice.

Yew! Gross! I see my low expectations of people's behaviour is not unfounded

Hahaha! Harringay's own Dogging hotspot?

I had not seen a soft top BMW. Whodathunkit?

Regrettably I have very low expectations where people's behaviour is concerned. Generally people think they can do what they like no matter if it has a detrimental effect on others. I have two very large heavy chains on my motorbike and taking them off and putting them on makes an absolute racket but there's really not a lot I can do about it. If I lived a late night lifestyle I'm sure it would drive my neighbours insane.
