Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!
On street bike storage - great idea!
On my run yesterday I noticed that a couple of roads had on street bike sheds. They seem like such a great idea as currently I have to lug my bike through the house - which is particularly rubbish when it is wet and muddy outside.
These seem like such a great idea to give safe storage and encourage more people to cycle - getting healthier and reducing the traffic on the roads.
How can we get more?

I think the one on Hewitt was pretty simple. A resident asked the Council for one, the Council checked for objections then delivered it.
This page on the Haringey Cycling Campaign gives a very good outline of the scheme. I'm sure they'll be happy to provide you with an update.
The attached pdf is the one we received during the consultation. Two notes on it. In the list of locations, for Hewitt Avenue, read Hewitt Road. A click through to the Cyclehoops website suggests that the organisation has closed down.

Actually I take it back. These green domed versions are quite attractive. Certainly much better than the boxy brushed aluminium variations I've seen in various forms on the ladder. Are they noisy to open and close I wonder as that might put people off having one outside their home. The banging of metal on metal if people come home late etc. Just like the lovely man reading our water meters just before 1am this morning ..

They do have a soft close type mechanism, but a lot is up to the responsibility of those who use them.
One advantage of having the local residents association managing them rather than the company is that this sort of issue can be highlighted & addressed.

Do you mean the boxy ones that people have in their own gardens, or the communal ones on the road? I think the ones on the road are quite nice but I probably wouldn't use one for my bike. I'd be too worried about vandalism or some fool in a delivery truck reversing over it.

I'm aware of some dissent from residents in Acknee, they've been installing these for some time over there. Some cyclists having requested bike hangers are finding them difficult to use as other residents fill them up by transfering little used family bikes from back garden/in house storage to the new on street facilities.

The page says that 17 have been installed around the borough. My understanding is that they have a long waiting list for new sites & how many we get will depend on how much funding they get in the new financial year. I think one source of funding is the Mayor of London.
Note that most of the cycle hoops in the borough are managed by http://www.cyclehoop.com, but the two in the Gardens are managed by the Gardens Residents Association, which is cheaper - but there is another waiting list for space in them!
One challenge is finding a site that is acceptable - many people seem fine to have a taller & longer car outside their house, but are worried about a half-car length of a cycle hanger in front of it.

Thanks for that Cyclehoop link. I don't know what happened when I tried it.
With regards to why people object, when the Hewitt one was being installed, I read around a bit and some people reported. Sing disturbed in the early mornings by the hangers being banged closed.
