Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Haringey Council's website   http://www.haringey.gov.uk/environment-and-waste/noise-and-animal-c...   gives you the information you need to tackle noisy builders working throughout the weekend:

They state the working days for weekdays (8am - 6PM) and weekend days… (Saturday only 8am - 1PM). "Noisy building work should not take place on Sunday or Bank Holidays."

They cite that builders undertaking noisy work outside of these hours may be liable to a £5K fine where a notice has been served under the Control of Pollution Act 1974.

Show the above page and it's often enough to stop the noise and they just leave. I have been lucky this last weekend in asking two sets of builders - front and back - of my place that was driving me mad and stopping me working on an important document I needed to finish this weekend. One builder (Polish) knew that they were in the wrong and stopped the work immediately and was very pleasant to deal with. The other (Bulgarian) didn't seem to know about any regs but started to clear up. Their gang master arrived and shouted a bit but looked at the paperwork and backed down. In fact I hadn't notified them for sometime putting up with the noise over 4 hours over the deadline and I pointed this out. There have been no repercussions although the builders saw where i lived. They were generally very pleasant.

If tackled with understanding on both sides then much can be achieved. The Enforcement Response Team on 02084891335 or at weekends 0208489000(ask for the Team to lodge a complaint) will pursue the problem.. not sure how effective they are but showing the info from the webpage had helped me.

Good luck!

May i ask the relevance as to what nationality the builders were ?

British workers would probably not been so pleasant.

Thats a bit harsh.

They may know about local building regs and not have breached the restrictions in the first place.

But, ill bow to your greater knowledge of the british working-mans psyche.

How else can you efficiently direct your prejudice....

I jest

No you don't.. and I'm glad you aren't.

It's the icing on the cake of argument innit.

Building workers in general ..low down sc**, Polish building workers .. lower down sc**  Bulgarian building workers  even worse.

"If tackled with understanding so much can be achieved"… my words. In my experience James, workers from other countries don't know about our health and safety laws and our local byl aws etc.. unless they have specifically been trained over here. In the main FE/HE colleges in the Craft Trades teach this and that's good surely? Maybe clients don't too but common sense tells us that working hours are controlled for obvious reasons for health and sanity! Only one out of the five spoke English btw. Let's hope that they weren't being exploited on low wages to have to work all hours in the first place for their clients...people living here in Harringay… wanting a good cheap job done for however many days it takes… now that's worth talking about too.

Paul Simon Estates built a new block of flats near us, they are part of the 'considerate construction' pledge (or something like that). Apart from a bit of dust and occasional profanities from sub-contractors the job was done with little inconvenience. Got talking to two of the Romanian builders, nice blokes.

The guy who owns the flat above mine did so much loud building work outside permitted hours.

Then when I had three days of work on my kitchen (9-5) his tenants complained they couldn't sleep, and deliberately woke me up at night.
