Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Yesterday I was dropping off leaflets on my road (on the ladder) to promote Harringay Market.

I started not putting them through letterboxes saying "no junk mail". Then, when I saw others saying "no junk mail, no free newspapers and no leaflets/flyers" (and variations thereof) I decided that the leaflet (on quality card and nicely printed) wasn't "mail" exactly....

I did have a dilemma. I thought that some of my neighbours might not know about the market, but that it might especially be of interest to them.

Ultimately I tended to drop off leaflets in  letterboxes that didn't want junk mail, but not in those that didn't want flyers.

If you are on here, don't want junk mail - but got a flyer through your letterbox - sorry (and you probably knew about the market anyway)!

In which case, why not take the flyer back to the market and leave for Jessica so she can reuse them?

Pop as many as you like in my door, I will put a poster in the window for you if you like too.

I have a no junk mail sticker on the door because we get bombarded with leaflets in our road. They can roughly be divided into God (30%), Pizza (60%) with the rest being equally divided between estate agents and mini cabs.  The stickers do work because I now don't get any, so they obviously work.

Afraid I can't supply- I did it to help get word around; like many others I go there to use not loose! Am sure Jessica can provide though...

Had a similar dilemma doing my road. In the end, didn't put postcards through 'no junk mail' letterboxes after feeling guilty about ignoring the first two or three (sorry if you're on my road and really meant NO mail).

I understand why people get fed up of the leaflets etc but sometimes things come through the day that I can use like money off at Big Green Books or flyers for local events so I don't have a 'no junk mail' sticker despite my tree hugger ways. I did bump into a couple of people coming out of doors marked no JM and handed them a postcard, explaining about the market and they were interested, so perhaps people won't be too cross where you put the p/c through a no junk mail letterbox.

Me too - and I had to explain to those with doors open (I felt I should) I had no financial interest; why I've never even met any of the HoL people responsible/supportive, despite being there for most of today.

Still, I finally had the katsu curry (after last week's Sri Lankan treat), followed 2 hours later by a burger. And here is my placing

The katsu curry was AMAZING, I will so eat again, and almost did today - though I had to sample elsewhere.

Sri Lankan food was tasty treat, ranking so far 2nd.

My "bear" burger - well, it tasted of meat - not quite steamed enough under the lid while grilling; with my chilli chocolate "angry" sauce I expected heat, something special. 5-6 bites in, it was same as first bite, just another burger... I wished I'd taken the (free) hot bottled sauce in addition to the £1 sauce that made it "angry", for heat!! The best bit was the red onion as the given garnish...Sorry bear burger people!

So, thus far go KATSU - fabu!!!

You had a curry AND a burger? We need to get this thing shut down. Sunday is for exercising not being gluttons! Disgraceful.

Hey Steve!

Thanks for the feedback. The choc/chilli sauce is our 2nd hottest sauce on the menu, and too hot for most so maybe I didn't put enough on there for you..? As for the meaty taste, that is our USP, not the sauces. It's the finest herefordshire beef, locally reared, hung for no less than 30 days and we want you to taste it.

Sorry that this time we didn't do it for you! Next time come and tell me and I'll happily blow your mind with another extra saucy, thrice flipped mega hot Angry Bear.

Feedback is great as it was only our 3rd day of trading.

Flyers? Some houses have notices which are incontrovertibly clear.

One of my neighbours has this one on their door, may not be incontrovertibly clear but it probably puts off most people (and with all the rubbish strewn about the streets these days its style sadly suits how the neighbourhood looks):

I go leafletting for our Residents' Assn - we leaflet every house in our little hood. I figure that this info is not junk - it's democracy in action. I did think about it at the first door where I met that sticker, then made the above decision.

I have a specific sign on my door, as like Liz I value some of the junk - no takeaway leaflets, no religious callers. Seems to work except for the ones who perhaps can't read - with those that slip through, I post them back, with no stamp, and suggest they train their agents to pay attention - only when I'm feeling mean enough to be arsed though.

Junk mail is junk mail, no matter how good the cause.

But I don't think those signs have any legal force: it's up to the deliverer to decide whether to respect them or not.

Any junk mail here goes straight into the recycling bin, conveniently located just outside the front door

But I don't think those signs have any legal force

John, I'm amazed at you. You know as well as I do that these signs have the same effectiveness and legal force as our 20-Zone signs on Wightman Road.

Would you be allowed to have a sign at either end of the road like they have for the Alexandra Palace market?  That might be cost effective advertising and maybe a few posters out to schools, community centres, local ymca.  Maybe some of the local agents would sponsor some boards although I am not sure we need more of those at the moment.
