Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

I've been trying for over a month to get an appointment at my local surgery, Bridge House, where I've been a patient for twenty years. They have recently had a catastrophic loss of staff, with four doctors leaving this month for a variety of reasons, and so far only one permanent replacement appointed. The result is that it's completely impossible to get an appointment - they simply say there are none 'on the system' and to try back in a few days, when it's exactly the same story.

There is a phone consultation triage system in the morning to deal with emergency appointments, I don't want to use that, as it's something long term I wish to discuss and I'm not sure I'd 'qualify'. Nonetheless I'm beginning to feel a bit desperate, and as though there really is no primary health care service available to me.

Is there another GP practice that is functioning better in Haringey, or are they all in the same boat?

KP the comment about immigration was in response to Xavier, I should have made that explicit; he said "It may also be to do with our grossly overpopulated borough, starting with Labours deliberate open door immigration policy and the lack of control thereafter."

You say "Overpopulation is definitely another reason it's a constant struggle to see the doctor!" however in Haringey there are 1538 patients per full time GP which is middling; more relevant may be that a third of all GP practices nationwide have at least one unfilled GP vacancy, and GPs complain of increased workload through increased "complexity".

The problems that GPs are experiencing and in turn the increasing appointment waiting times can be addressed if there is political will however stats show that it is getting worse.

Maggie, l did not deny that there was a GP shortage, nor did I actually put the blame on immigrants (my wife is one). It is common political knowledge that the mass influx from Europe without control overwhelmed our services, to be honest I'm surprised that our NHS is still functioning at all.

But let's face it, those nasty ministers haven't helped AT ALL have they.

That was always my experience at the Bridge House surgery  --- it's why I left! Worst practice I have ever experienced. I think it is generally hard to get a doctors appointment in London (especially if you have to work and can't wait around all day for an appointment) but this surgery is notorious

Contact Haringey CCG and ask to speak to the Patient Advice and Liason Service (PALS). You can either register this as a complaint, or if you don't want to call it a complaint, say you need advice on how you can get an appointment.  Ultimately it is Haringey CCG's responsibilty to be providing GP services to their patients so this needs to be registered as an issue with them.

I am so glad that I left Bridge House they are a total joke.
So which GP did you switch to?

I'm not sure if anything has improved but at Morum House we had a similar problem.  For some reason they have a system where you could only book appointments on the day you went into the surgery or the same day a week or two in advance i.e if you went in on Weds you could only book this Weds, next Weds or the Weds after that.  Of course all the appointment slots were fully booked so the only alternative was to try another day.  The telephone and internet booking systems were both not working and hadn't been for a long time.  I complained to the surgery and our MP as I thought this to be completely ridiculous and a tacit way to discourage people from going to the surgery.  I dont know if anything has changed as I haven't been back, so I guess their ploy has worked!

Hornsey Park Surgery.

Feeling rather smug with my satisfactory surgery, Rutland House in Muswell Hill, I decided to check their online booking system. Only one doctor available (they are one I do not trust.) Only one appt available and that next Friday. It seems the infection is spreading(in the NHS)

Could.you tell me which doctors have left, please, Maddy?

As far as I can grasp the situation - Dr Ferrar has moved to Norfolk and her post has been filled but not till April; Dr Curtin and Dr Thomas have also left suddenly, no reasons given. Dr Brothers and Dr Haas still there. So actually three doctors down, not four, sorry.

But it's incredibly hard to recruit GPs, especially to inner city practices - very few medical trainees want to go into general practice, with the way it is now. Haringey has an ongoing shortage of GPs for the number of residents, which I think is pretty predictable given that they keep building new flats but not new surgeries or other infrastructure facilities.
