Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

... Nikolaos Talaiporos? I've lived at the same address in N15 for over 10 years but recently I've had a few pieces of mail for him...

Thanks.

James, please don't post statements like this unless you're in a position to be certain that what you're saying is correct.

I'm not in a position to provide an expert opinion on this issue. But, common sense and a quick Google tells me that the opinion you've presented, unfortunately as a fact, is incorrect.

It's not hard to find statements such as the following:

The Postal Services Act 2000 clearly states that it is certainly illegal to open someone's post, or delay it reaching the owner.

The Act says: "A person commits an offence if, intending to act to a person's detriment and without reasonable excuse, he opens a postal packet which he knows or reasonably suspects has been incorrectly delivered to him."

Although throwing it away may not be the same as peeking, most people (and more importantly, lawyers) could argue that binning the mail "delays" the post indefinitely, which is a crime.

If anyone can offer an expert view on this issue, please do pitch in.

Not an expert, but this is also my understanding.

I return them to sender, personally.

2 years ago, this was not working with a series of similar looking letters. I bought a return to sender ink stamp, and used it to cover the entire envelope except the return address with stamps. This worked (a little surprisingly - I was expecting at best to be left with a cathartic effect and a stamp).

It's also my non-expert understanding that someone getting credit and then defaulting on it using your address doesn't affect your credit rating unless they are recorded as financially linked to you on your credit file. Telling bailiffs of the non existence of a person at your house when they show up doesn't sound fun, though.

Sticking to the mail issues for the time being, the best available informed opinion is the one I've given above. If your understanding has any reference to support it as having any basis in fact, please share.

ah ok thank you. i'm repeating what i heard on BBC radio 4 'moneybox'. apologies, but i'm glad that i am wrong because it just didn't sound right, hence my post.
