Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

The Alexandra Palace Trust has announced that due to the high levels of antisocial behaviour, illegal parking and dangerous driving since lockdown, they have made an agreement with Haringey Council, Haringey Police and TfL to the close Alexandra Park Way at night. Alexandra Palace Way Parking Bays will also be closed 24 hours a day. These measures will be in place for the foreseeable future.

Only two days ago, the Ham and High carried the following report.

"Police are taking 'extremely seriously' the 'Wild West' scene of 'boy racers' around Alexandra Palace which has condemned some drivers’ actions as 'selfish beyond words'. Revving engines, aggressive driving, pavement parking, quadbike racing and overcrowding have been reported in Palace Gates Road, Station Road, Priory Road and streets in the vicinity of the palace in recent weeks. Ally Pally, which reopened some of its car parks on May 22 to combat rogue parking, says it is 'frustrated' by the 'lack of respect' shown by some drivers."

Perhaps taking advantange of the low traffic in recent weeks, boy racers have been getting bolder with their rallies. Now that traffic is returning to normal it is getting seriously dangerous, and the police are promising to increase evening patrols and will step up enforcement.

Key information

  • The night-time road closure will start on Tuesday 2nd June 2020.
  • The hours of closure will be 20:00 hrs - 05:00 hrs
  • The W3 bus will be diverted during these hours
  • Cars parked in the Alexandra Palace Way parking bays need to be removed by 9am on Tuesday 2nd June. Any remaining after that time will be towed away.

Further information is provided in a blog post from Trust CEO, Louise Stewart.

Maybe it would be good to make the closure permanent?  Encourage more public transport and cycling?  Cut down on commuter rat runs? Buses could perhaps continue to use it?

Hi, So sad to see such a decline at Ally Pally, as a youth I had many great times there using the facilities that were in place. I agree that through traffic should be removed from there and barriers installed at both ends to allow permit holders- emergency services and buses only. Hope this situation improves for the locals.

Have Locals noticed a Difference in Night Time Activities now that it Closed to Traffic in Evenings

I Doubt if Night Time closure will effect the Park, in the long term

Due to the large numbers living in Boxes in the Sky

But something had to be done with past Night Time Activities
