Night at the library [TONIGHT]
Travelling back from Sheffield earlier this week, who should sit down opposite me but Diana Edmonds, Head of Haringey Libraries. As well as hearing about the great news on the survival of Haringey Libraries through the recent cuts, Diana told me about the forthcoming Book Night event.
World Book Night on 5th March represents the most ambitious and far-reaching celebration of adult books and reading ever attempted in the UK and Ireland.
Locally on the night, Book in a Night at Hornsey Library will see locals staying up all night to celebrate what Haringey libraries mean to all of us.
The night will include for live music, films, readings by notable locals (whatever that can o'worms might mean!), debate, collaborative writing etc.
Book Night is being run by Chris Meade, Director of if:book, the think and do tank exploring the future of the book. Chris was previously CEO of Booktrust and the Poetry Society, has been arts officer in public libraries.

Nest (@handmadenest on Twitter), the knitting shop in Weston Park Road Crouch End, has an event on 5th March. Half of a Yellow Sun by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie is being gievn away between 2 and 6pm in Nest. and you can stock up on yarn etc while you are there. Nice way to support a new local business

Hugh - d'you have a direct link to what's on locally and who to contact? The bookfutures link goes straight to the national World Book Night website. I know a couple of wonderful local writers who might like to take part at the Hornsey Library event, if that's still an option. Ta, Kit

An over-night celebration of what Haringey Libraries mean to us all.
Feel free to join us throughout the night for live music, films, readings, collaborative writing, debates and finally a breakfast picnic.
Book Talk
- 5.30pm: Award Winning novelist Linda Grant, author of We Had It So Good, is being interviewed by Gillian Slovo.
Book Live
- 7pm to 10pm Acoustic sets from Katherine Blake (Mediaeval Baebes), Nick Marsh (Urban Voodoo Machine), Ronnie Golden, Marcia Mello and JC001 (former holder of World’s Fastest Rapper title).
- Midnight to 7am 'Call and Response's' eclectic mix of ambient sounds in the main library.
Book Debate
- 10.30pm:Diana Edmonds, Assistant Director of Haringey Culture, Libraries and Learning, Chris Meade, Unlibrarian and Director of if: book, the Future of the Book, and special guests discuss the library of their dreams – what could libraries be in the 21st century? Join the debate…tell us what Haringey Libraries mean to you!

- 12.30am (that's half past midnight!): Fahrenheit 451 (1966) cert. PG
- 4am: Wings of Desire: (1987) cert. PG
- Throughout the night: Film Shorts from the 2010 Wood Green Film Festival
Book in a Night (in the UnLibrary):
- Throughout the night: Our UnLibrary team (Chris Meade and Kati Rynne) will curate the making of a digital book. Help them write, edit, illustrate and publish writings on the subject of dreams… in just twelve overnight hours. All you need to bring is your laptop, creativity and a sleeping bag!
Paper Installations:
- Throughout the night: Bring your old plastic bottles and anything colourful to help local artist Kiki Machado (who makes beautiful art out of the things other people throw away) turn Hornsey Library into a giant, rubbish art instillation.
Book In a Message:
- Throughout the night: we shall be inviting you to write, in 20 words why you love Haringey Libraries. Keep it short, sweet and incredibly passionate!
Books Back:
- Throughout the night: we are having a fines amnesty! So return your overdue books anytime between 5pm Saturday 5 March and Noon on Sunday 6 March 2011, and we will delete your fines, on that item(s).
Book Night Give Away:
- Paul Higgins of Make Friends with a Book, and Sally of Piece of Plenty will be giving away free books for you to read through the night.
Fun for Children:
- 5pm - 9pm: Crafts, films and nursery rhymes in the Children’s Library
- 10am: Story time,
- 10.30am: Make a collage with local illustrator Tanya Linch
Breakfast Picnic and Jazz (in the Foyer):
- 10am: Pack your bagels, baguettes, marmalade, and head down to Hornsey library for a Sunday morning picnic. You bring the blankets; we’ll play the live jazz!
