Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

This week the Haringey Independent carries the following story:

Curtain-twitching is being encouraged by Haringey Council in a bid to crack down on litterbugs.

Letters have been sent to residents living in Nightingale Lane, Hornsey, asking them to keep an eye out for people dropping rubbish, after the council found the area was a hot-bed for littering.

And, local Harringay councillor and cabinet member responsible for this area of work, Nilgun Canver is quoted in the article.

Wonder what Liz will make of this or if she'll like it or not.

Not really, to be honest. Getting people to report littering doesn't get to the root of the problem. Questions need to be asked about why this area is a 'hot-bed' for littering. What is it about the Lane that means it has more problems?

Simply writing letters to ask people to report litterers doesn't begin to tackle the issue. People won't do it or if they do, they'll probably not get any feedback from their report and won't bother twice. What is needed is an assessment of what attracts litter, what kind of rubbish is dumped and talking to locals about what they feel needs to be done to change things.

Moreover, there has to be a fundamental change in people's outlook that makes them feel that it is unacceptable to foul their own nest and get them to recognise that it harms them both financially (as clearing up must be paid for) and in terms of their mental health since living with rubbish on your doorstep all the time is depressing.

Also, forgive my cynicism about the very letter itself. Not so long ago we were all promised letters about fouling and rubbish problems here. Despite a press release, they never materialised. There seems to be a complete lack of imagination both locally and nationally when it comes to tackling this issue. Asking people to snoop and handing out random fines won't change a culture that finds it morally acceptable to drop rubbish or dump their junk.
