Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

New River pathway

The New River path is a flourishing natural environment , but  recently  the section adjacent to Wightman Rd. is marred by amounts of litter which not only spoil its aspect but is dangerous for  wild life. For instance, the plastic wrappers for beer packs which the local drunks dump along with their cans. Whose responsibility is  it to clean this area?

And just to allay any fears that my earlier comment may have prompted Anette to lay into those 'alkie scum', I was just expressing delight that the worshipping group were overcoming their addiction to rubbishy scandilager in favour of a real man's drink.

Most of the 'bushes' adorned with beer cans appear to be the thoroughly pernicious and invasive Japanese Knotweed - I was under the impression there was some sort of legislation requiring  authorities to eliminate it along water courses...

This IS the authorities' elimination plan! they've tried weed killer, they've tried introducing bugs from brazil, they tried napalm... None of these things worked so now they're trying a radical new plan: strong Polish lager.

Osbawn, you seem a natural at this.

At the moment between my studies, the school holidays and the Festival, I'm not ready to take on a new project immediately. However, after 13th October (post exam) I may be able to make some time for this. So unless anyone else wants to lead on it, I'd be up for an exploratory meeting (perhaps with Bob or someone from the New River Action Group). In the meantime, it would  do no harm to write letters of complaint to Thames Water asking them to sort out the litter/knotweed/neglect issues.

I've just had a stroll down there bringing my little boy and his mate back from the Harringay club and its is looking a lot cleaner. There are still some beer cans in odd places, a bit of graffiti and some mysterious pieces of burned cloth but nothing like the pictures that Anette posted in this thread. I did write to Thames Water and enclose some of Anette's pictures, so it would be nice to think that there was some action on that mailing...or maybe it was due to be cleaned up anyway but, in any case, a vast improvement. It might be an idea for regular users to make use of their cameras and the contact details Alison posted and complain as soon as they think the mess has got out of hand.

All it takes is for one interested person to take a stroll along the banks once a week with a black bag and a pair of marigolds. It takes 20 mins tops.

Ah, so you are our secret Uncle David! Thank you very much. It certainly looks a lot better and feels safer too, without so much alcohol related litter. It may also be that if it looks like someone is 'monitoring' it, people feel less inclined to trash it (this is my theory on my 'adopted' bits of the Harringay Passage anyway)

 
p.s. Thought it was too much to hope that Thames Water act on emailed complaints, although I did get two 'promises' to investigate from them :)

Earlier in the week, as I walked along the path I pulled all the cans that had been 'added' to apparently impossibly high branches. So we're now Beercanmas decoration free - probably for at least 3 days.

I actually wondered if the beercan trees were an artistic installation. Do we have a New River Bank(sy ) ?
