New River Path through the ladder

Matt,

Only just came across this. I can shed some light on your original question: at least 10 years ago, I remember there was a proposal to open the Ladder section of the New River as a permanent part of the New River path. The residents - I live on one of the New River roads - were canvassed and the majority who replied on it apparently voted no.

Tim. Just out of interest where did you stand then, and where do you stand now.

I can see why folks living next to the NR might have concerns- as things stand  they have a relatively nice and safe (?) area next to their homes. But I can see why a blanket opening would worry them.

Hi Justin,

I don't live close enough to the New River to have had any personal security concerns over the path being opened permanently, but, yes, one can well understand why people did, and would, in view of our area's longstanding appeal to the burglaring profession and habitual rubbish dumpers. Further long lengths of the green metal defensive fence probably wouldn't be visually that pleasant, or popular, compared to what we have now either. Exposing the swans and the smaller nesting water birds to further human intrusion must also be an issue.

But a kind of summer 'open house' opening for a day or two seems an imaginative and enjoyable idea, for sure.
